It was lunch-time when Randy, Deidra, and their Pokemon reached the place where they'd met. They decided to stop at the small pool surrounded by the trees to have lunch. Blaze was starting to get tired, he was in better shape than before (but it was still a long way to walk for the little guy), and was glad for a chance to rest. Medi didn't need to be fed because in his Pokeball, stasis, he didn't get hungry or tired.
After lunch they headed off into the wilds of Isabella Plains. Randy kept a sharp eye on the trees, as well as listening for the rustling of Pokemon in the tall grass, for any sign of Wild Pokemon that they might get a chance to battle while here. She knew it would take more than just Blaze to beat the Gym Leader. Medi might be a help or a hinderance, as she hadn't won his trust yet. So he was more of a random factor, and Randy would prefer to have some easier to handle Pokemon to rely on as well as her Blaze.
Besides, according to Professor Mahogany the first Gym leader had dragon-types. She wanted to be prepared when they arrived to face them.
Meanwhile, she and Deidra were happily chatting away, from time to time, or lost in thoughts of their own, in turns. "Say, what routine are you planning on using in the Contest Areana?" Asked Randy, casually.

SKipping. So what if her victory high had worn off, no reaso not to skip, and announce her presence to everything. Outside of her mouth the end of a half eaten cookie bounced just as high as she did as she went along the dusty Route One trail. Like almost all the things her mom cooked in the way of baing this little item was studded with chocalate of all kinds. Chocalate chunks, chocalate chips, and of course chocalote smothered the bottom of the cookie. It was quite good, of course when asked about a Routine she inhaled much to deeply and went into a fit of coughing, cookie crumbs lining her nasal passages.
"I really do not know. With only two moves its rather hard to know, but mom and dad hardly ever let him train with them." Most of the contraptions had required arms, things that the Sunkern didn;t have. So to Diedra and Son most of the backyards machine were rather useless, of course their(Son thought of them as having the same parents)parents paid for the equipment. So they did get to dictate who used it. "Tackle isn't really a contest move, which I s why I need to catch another pokemon" They required two different pokemon for contests, one for the first round, and one for the second, higher up they even asked you for three pokemon.

Blaze ran along behind Deidra, eating her crumbs.
"So, for now, we're in the same boat." Concluded Randy, "Since we probably won't be able to defeat the first Gym Leader with only Blaze and myself. Well, I believe Growl is a contest move, so you're at least half-way there; anyway, once I've shown you how to get to town you shouldn't have a problem with getting lost anymore, so you can take the Contest Hall on at your leisure then."
When they had traveled a little further, Randy thought she could see a nest up a tree, and motioned for Deidra and the others to be quiet, then she motioned Blaze over and put him on her shoulder as she climbed up the tree to have a look.

Diedra glanced back at Blaze, and had a hard tiem supressing her giggle. He was sooo cute! Not to mention he didn't seem very frightened of her anymore. Yesterday, or the day before he would have ran and hid behind a tree if she ha tried to talk to him, now he was walking right underfoot, snatching up cookie crumbs. "Yes we are. I am sure I'll have nother pokemon I can use to help Son before then though." Surprisingly enough the Sunkern didn't puff up, and take on his 'Na-uh' look. In fact he really didn't mind tha she insiuted that he wasn't good enough to do this on his own. The contests required it, at least Subt had told him that.
Diedra watched as her friend climbed the tree. So could have floated up there, but she decided to leave Randy's ego unbruised. Everytime a branch creaked Diedr a flinched, and the closer the pair got to the nest the more worried she became. Especially when a loud caw broke out. Yet To Son it seemed the Pidgey was greeting a old friend, or a old oppenent anyway, was this the Pidgey they had ran into earlier? They had discussed him after all.
<Well well..hello again Lad.> The pidgey spoke. No this wasn't hisn est, he had just used it during the earlier wind spell the day had. Of course he was glad that the creature climbing the tree hadn't been returning to guard its nest. He was distressed however that the same trainer he had maet before seemed to follow him around. He climbed a obscure tree, she found her way up it,. He sat on the path she would likely trip over his feathery body. Stalker. That's what humans called people like her. Of course her chicken friend was the same way.[/blockquote]

"Hey!" Cried Randy, surprised, startled, confused, "It's YOU again!" She couldn't believe that this was the same bird they'd fought the other day.
<Hi> Blaze added, too surprised to be shy or anything else either.
"Well, how about a rematch Pidgey." Asked Randy, soberly. Then, without waiting for an answer, she let Blaze climb down her arm to the branch where the Pidgey was in the nest. Then she cried, "Growl, Blaze!"
Then she realized that she'd better tell Deidra what was going on, so she called down to Deidra, "It's that Pidgey I was telling you about!"

<I reallly would prefer no--> Why even ask if they were going to start a fightanyway. Leaning on his right foot he let the growl flow harmlessly by. It wasn't dangerous after all. This time though he didn't laugh he knew that this little, harmless looking chick, was in fact not harmless at all. Rather dangerous actually. Of course he had inflicted no damage that the nap he had been taking when they had arrived didn't cure his problem. So he really was rearing to go, but if they insisted on fighting in a tree then he wouldn't feel bad if the now flihgtless beast fell.
Turning To randy he blinked. <Please stop following me.> Satisified that he had gotten his warning across he turned back to the Torchic, watching for anything to clue him in on a imminent attack. A muscle twitch, a shout from her trainer. The hsut was the most obvious and most common one. Pushing himself up from the nest the Pidgey narrowed his eyes at the Torchic. Maybe the tree trunk would knock soem sense into he and his trainer. The nest was rather close to it after all.
Diedra nodded. "Good luck!If you need any help do not hesitate to ask!" beside her the Usnkern purred. His words resembling the meaning of the human 'Good luck..and Victory to ya!' of course his mostly meant good battling.

Oblivious to what the Pidgey was saying, but understanding the glare to mean he was ready to accept the challenge, she waited for him to make a move while Blaze was growling at him. She returned the Pidgey's stare with her own determined gaze, unblinkingly (45 words).
Randy and Blaze had also worked on their fighting line-up of attacks, when they were at Deidra's house. They had a special one, which Randy now called out, "Tumble-Roll Scratch!" Basically it was that Blaze would do a forward somersault and then when he was on his back and coming down he'd start scratching away. Randy felt this would be the safest attack to do in a tree as it would keep Blaze dead center on the branch. Hopefully the Pidgey wouldn't have enough room to dodge it on the branch (93 words).
Meanwhile, she moved back down the tree a little, so she could better see what was going on, and catch Blaze should he be knocked off the branch, which was now above her head (34 words).

The Pidgey having nowhere to run to, jumpedi nto the attack, getting in a tackle of his own. Then his world burst imnto a alternate reality of pain. Those scratches hurt! <Didn' ya learn hwo unsafe it was to fight in a tree the first time? Obviously not!> Scold. He likied doign that, it was quite a bit of fun. Stemmed off his boredom for a little while. Just had to be careful not to let that while stretch any longer then necessary. Takign a step back he drove his head down towards where the Torchic was. Not much to tackle when you had nowehere to build up momentum.

Blaze was back on his feet, but had no-where to dodge on the limb. So instead he attacked back when the Pidgey rammed another tackle home, and simultanious to his attack--for they were working together in-sinc, just as when they were practicing their accuracy at Deidra's house --Randy called out, "Crab-hammer Thrust!" This basically meant that using his tiny wings unfolded and flapping them with a fury as a distractionary tactic (held out in front of himself), he ran forward, and then followed up with his Scratch attack.
<Yeah, but I'm not scared.> Blaze managed to say before launching his attack to counter the Pidgey's own. <I've got Randy.> (114 words)
The two birds met headlong, and Blaze was knocked back along the branch back towards the trunk, while the pidgey went in the opposite direction. Blaze couldn't tell if his Scratch attack had hit home, but at least they had some room between them now, about a foot apart in fact, so Blaze when he heard Randy's next call, "Growl, Blaze!" He was ready.
The little fire chicken launched another Growl, this one was almost as cute as the way Deidra and Son had been giving them pointers on how to give. (92 words)

Diedra sat at the base of the tree, waving her arms, and cheering. Of course to Randy most of the words were undecipherable, due to th blowing wind and hieght of the tree. In her lap Son copied her, spinning around her and shouting happily, his voice likely reached much farther the Diedra's , the pitch it was at helped that. The high pitch, the slightly annoying pitch. Not that anyone had ever yelled at him for it. <Go Blaze!> The moves were very original, and had been learned in less then 3 hours. Which Diedra had to say was very productive on there part. Raising a hand to her head she ran her pink tipped fingers through her green hair and sighed. "Nice job Blaze.Although the name could use some work." She was in fact jealous, why couldn't she make up moves like that?
---
The Scratch was easy to dodge this time. Flattening himself close to the branch he flippedo ver onto his back, and butted his head forward. Hoping to send Pyric closer towardds the trunk, and give himself the advantage of movement. Whatever this girl wanted to win for he doubted he would like. Probably to 'train; him or some such nonsense. What pokemon wanted to be 'trained' a crazy one thats which one. <Don;'t be brave because you are ordered to do it. Besides she couldn't even take a tackle, what makes you think she can protect you.> The end of that sentence was punctuatded with a growl. That little feather balls little moans and growls were really taxing o his concentration after a while. Now he wished he was asleep, and bored. Which was saying something he hated beign bored.
<Orignal move. > Same thing as Diedra said, f course it ws rather dangerous, flapping his ltitle wingsl ike that on a windy day, what if he had been blown off the branch. More then likely his trainer wuldn't haev been able to catch him.

Blaze was surprised that the Pidgey didn't understand, <But I'm not brave because I'm ordered to. And, besides, she's tougher than you think.>
The wind was beginning to pick up. Randy began to worry about the safety of her little fire-bird, but she figured it'd be alright for the time being, at least. (54 words)
"Growl again, then try the Grab-Scratch!" Called Randy. She wasn't satisfied with the name, but the way Blaze had grabbed Son the previous day was a good move and Randy thought it'd be best to work on it too. Besides, with the wind blowing stronger now, it'd be safer to close with the Pidgey to continue the battle. That would leave them near the middle of the branch, and so not at the tip where they'd had to end the battle yesterday. (83 words)
Blaze made an attempt to close with the Pidgey and jump a little to grab him by his beak, to give him the Scratch attack full on the chest.

<Doubt it. But go ahead and be delusional if you choose.> Nothing he could do if he Torchic didn't believe that the weakest of pokemon attacks could likely harm a human, mortally wound them, as he had heard som other, larger and 'smarter' pokemon say. Taking a deep breath he moved slowly towards the Torchic, hoping to push him back towards the ttree trunk slowly. The feathers could feel a gust of wind coming on. The little chicken was likely to clumsy to hold on for himself. Tightening his claws grip in the branch he looked up just to see the Torchic charging towards him.
Feeling the other pokemon's smaller beak grip his own he began shaking his head. Then with a strike of intuiton turned the Pidgeys own move against him. The level four Pidgey took the scar leavig scratch in the belly, but had charged ahead in a close range tackle towards the Torchic, Smart, and revulitonary. Just like him. Alright so maybe it resembeld him. Of course it would hopefully alleviate the tension building around his now bleeding beak. That little mouth was sharp! Compared to his anyway, one that had been dulled by eating seeds, and other rough things Blaze had not tried. <Are you sure she doesn't make you brave?i doubt you choose it. Look at ya pipsqueak> The last word wasn't meant to be deragatory, it was mroe of a big brother nickname.
Diedra meanwhile winced as the Pidgey's beak was grapped by the determined Torchic. Son knew from experience how much that hurt, and when he acted out the battle to Diedra's parents he emphazed that fact. With quite a few sighs, and tremors. Of course by then he had been feeling much better. A ham was one of the tings Son had ben, but he hadn't exagerrated how much a Grab-Scratch hurt. Not in the slightest.

Blaze managed to get a good grip on the Pidgey's beak, however, though he managed to get in a good Scratch attack he also was right in the path of the tackle. But, he managed to keep a hold of the Pidgey, and so was carried towards the trunk. At (50 words) the last moment before he was driven into the trunk, Randy called out for him to release his hold, so he did so, throwing himself to his right (and using the pidgey's feathery chest as a diving board of sorts) so that he'd be out of the path of the (100 words) tackling Pidgey. This also meant that he fell/lept off the branch. (112 words)
Randy was ready for this, and caught the falling Torchic (in her waiting arms) as he reached her position near the trunk on the lower branches. They hoped, but couldn't see, if the Pidgey's velocity would carry him into the tree trunk itself.

The Pidgeys little diveing board stunt stopped exactly what the pair wanted. Instead it sent him backward, with a loud and audible 'OOMPH!'. Pushing himself back up the Pidgey fixed a weary eye on the Torchic.Deciding to buy himself a surprise attack, he kept perfectly silent above the two. If they were lucky all they could see was a still wingtip, like that of a knockedout beast. Hopefully they would choose to investigate, and give him a chance to get in a tackle, and regardless of things going his way or not he'd get a few seconds to rest his tired brain.
Diedra sucked in a worried breath as the Torchic fell from the branch. The worry was expelled when seconds later he was safe in his trainers arm. Randy could be depended on that's for sure, although she would like to see her try that with a torchic. It would be rather comical to see.

Randy and Blaze exchanged glances. Randy could tell that the Pidgey hadn't been knocked off the branch by hitting the trunk, but couldn't see much of the bird from where they were standing. So she put Blaze on her left shoulder (the one closest to the trunk) and started to climb back up to the branch with the nest. She figured that if the Pidgey was still there that he might attack them, but she would at least be able to see where he was at and in what condition.
