Before going in the plains themselves, Joel looked at the Pokemon list for quite a long time. "I wonder, per chance, how lucky I would be to see a Dia." He thought more, however. Well, it's a pipe dream, anyway. In order to start bonding with Raptor, Joel released him from his pokeball. Immediately, Raptor crept in fear.
"It's okay! It's okay!" He picked him up, and put the timid Totodile on his head. "You're safe with me. I won't hurt you, and I won't make anything hurt you." Hearing these calming words, Raptor began to feel a bit more tame. He stopped shaking. "That's better." He patted Raptor on the head and walked off the town limits into the plain. "It really is beautiful, Raptor." Raptor nodded in agreement.
Joel looked around more. "I wonder where the Pokemon may be. I'm sure they're always hiding somewhere, if not, roaming around in the plains." Apparently, as I read from that documentary, Trainers hoard around these routes. I'm going to have to be very careful not to run into one.
Familiar on his head, Joel walked around the plains' wild grass. "This grass IS pretty tall. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if anything hid in this long land." After a long stroll of natural intervention, Joel sat down on some of the bald patches of grass. "Let's take a rest." He was trying his best to make Raptor feel comfortable, and have him trust Joel.

*TRIAL MOD POST*
Not far from where Joel was making his first steps into the grasses of the Isabella Plains, another young boy was routing around in the brush, serching for wild Pokemon to fight. A Meowth stood calmly next to him, wide brown eyes carefully scanning the horizon. The eyes widened even further as he saw a trainer approaching, and the Meowth tugged anxiously at his trainer's leg. <Theodore, someone's coming.> He mewed quietly.
Theodore looked up quickly, tangling his hair in a branch as he did so. Fumbling in embarressment he pulled himself free and straightened up to adress Joel. "Greetings trainer!" The boy called, adjusting his thick glasses and smoothing out his dark hair. Theodore stepped out onto the road, already preparing himself for battle. Looking Joel right in the eyes, he continued, "You probably already know this, but when two trainers lock eyes, it means a battle. That's the rule!"
Letting his challenge hang in the air for a moment, Theodore then turned back to Meowth, who was still hanging back a bit, waiting for oders. His trainer gave a short nod and Meowth hurried forward onto the battle field. The cat-like Pokemon extended his claws, his face set with determination. He was ready to go, but as always, Theodore hesetated, waiting for Joel's reply.
The young trainer was shifting his weight nervously from foot to foot. It had been a while since he'd last encountered a trainer, and trainer battles were much different than ones with wild Pokemon. Even if it was a newbie, Theodore knew he'd have to work hard and come up with a good strategy to win this battle. That was Theodore's great strenght and weakness: He was always able to come up with great strategies, but it took him forever to work out each move. A tactical genius with a slow-working brain was not much of a tactitian at all.

Joel looked ahead. He stared at the fledgling trainer as if he were staring into his very essence. Even Raptor, who was propped on Joel's head, was fearful as to what may be going on. The gravity of his stare showed no mercy, and he seems to have no emotion either. He just.. looked ahead.
It was intimidating- in fact, it went on for about 5 minutes. Raptor was shaking, only until he saw the Trainer's Meowth. <H-H-hi..> He said in Poke-talk, unable to be understood by Theodore nor Joel. After a while, Joel stopped staring, and got up. He walked a good distance away, and Raptor followed. He was about the distance to reach to throw his Pokeball for a battle. Still, his face was emotionless.
"Okay." He pointed a finger. "Go, Raptor!" This was his first fight. I have to think very tactically for t his one battle. Seeing as he has a Meowth, I bet I can tear through his offense with a great defense. Meowths are known for their furious claws, and that's one thing I can't risk. So, I'll have to have Raptor use Leer, perhaps enough times for Raptor to be safe from attacks too powerful. I may also have to use the terrain, which might work perfectly along with the flatness of the area. I could use the tall grass to conceal Raptor under the grass, and strike.
"One Pokemon. One in two victory." Joel was not only trying to act calm, seeing as this was his first battle, but he was trying to force pressure and scare Theodore into a harsher battle. He wanted to get the trainer spirit out of him, and take the trainer's ENERGY away from him. "Prepare to battle."

Theodore's eyes flicked nervously from the Totodile to his trainer and back. A Totodile, eh? They were usually very hyper, but this one looked timid and skittish. An easy target for his cunning Meowth. "Yes-Prepare to battle indeed." The nerdy child repeated slowly, his mind running through different strategies. I should use growl before he has a chance to attack. Theodore decided, nodding. So I'll have to make the first move. And yet he still gave no command.
Meowth yawned and looked back at his trainer expectantly. What was taking him so long? The boy already looked as if he knew what to do, and yet no orders were issued. So Meowth returned his wide amber stare to Joel and his Totdile, ready to leap out of the way when Raptor made the first move-Which he undoubtably would at the pace Theodore was moving.
Finally, Theodore clenched his fists decisivly and raised one, his index finger outstretched. "Meowth, go!" He shouted, then paused again. Meowth, who had tensed up at his trainer's call grew stiff after a minute of waiting and had to loosen up again. The next order caught him off guard as he tried to limber up: "Meowth, use Growl!" Theodore commanded in a stronge voice.
Meowth shook his head to clear it and drew his lips back in a snarl. A growl rumbled deep in his throat. The attack was ment to frighten and unbalance the opponent, though after the long wait for anything to happen it was unlikedly that Raptor would be effected at all.

Unfortunately, the great voice in the sky was right. In fact, Raptor was still busy crouching down in fear, closing his eyes and covering his ears. However, Joel walked up to him, holding him by the head. "It's fine. Come on, I'm going to need you here." He walked back to his side of the plain. "Okay, sorry about that- I'm ready." He shook his head for a second.
"Raptor, take to the grass!" Raptor stopped cowering, and decided to listen to the command. He jumped into the grass, and kept very silent. He moved slowly in order to stop fast and impulsive rustling. It was slow, yet very hard to notice. Slowly, he was inching behind the Meowth. "Now.. Scratch!" Hiding behind, very close to the Meowth, Raptor leaped out of the grass and tried to aim the best Scratch attack possible, thinking that it is a blind-spot or a weak area.
Joel adjusted his jacket straight. Now, if that hits, that Meowth will most likely move behind or horizontally. I don't expect a retaliation. I've got to move fast and attack, because this trainer apparently takes a while- even if it is pretty devastating once he gets an idea. I have to be slightly less reliant on the grass; otherwise, he'll expect it to happen and BAM! A critical strike.

Meowth turned quickly and tried to jump away, but Raptor's claws were already raking across his face. The feline yowled in pain and tottered backwards, clutching at his slashed muzzle, eyes watering. But he quickly pulls his paws away and continued the growl attack, as it was the only thing his trainer had told him to do so far. The Meowth danced nervously on the spot, trying to keep Raptor in his line of vision after already being snuck up on once.
Theodore adjusted his glasses again and let out a whistle. "It's alright, Meowth! You've just got to be faster!" He encouraged optimistically. Meowth only shot him an exasperated look. Ignoring the glance from his Pokemon, Theodore scratched his head, in deep thought. Joel was obviously trying to use the grasses to hide in, but Meowth's sharp eyes should easily be able to pick out the Totodile's blue hide against the grass. The young trainer nodded once more and called to his Pokemon, "Meowth, keep your eyes on Totodile and use scratch once he gets close enough!"
Meowth extended the claws of one paw and began weaving stealthily through the grasses, his eyes searching out a tell-tale patch of blue. Suddenly one stem of grass twitched slightly and his gaze fell on a spot of blue. <There you are!> He yelled triumphantly. Flicking out his paw fiercely, Meowth jumped at the blue Pokemon, aiming to score his claws along Raptor's back.

Joel stepped forward. "No! Quickly, Raptor! Jump out of the grass, and scare it out of it! Use LEER!" Joel was getting into it. Raptor slowly gained confidence as the battle went on. He actually felt trusted! Quickly, he jumped out of the grass, and released a strong leer. His eyes glinted, and he opened his jaw. His head held the expression of a monster.
"Kid, you're smart in the aspect you use your Pokemon's abilities well." Joel said. "But, you're forgetting a vital point. Hiding isn't all I intend to do in this battle!" While it may reveal a major weakness in his part, it also gives him a great advantage in a hidden sort of way. "I respect your strategy, though. Long thinking can lead to accurate striking."
Raptor continued with his long, deep stare. This time, it wasn't Joel doing the thinking, it was Raptor. I.. I don't really want to hurt the Meowth. B-but.. I don't wanna get hurt, either! Raptor quickly dismissed these thoughts, as he got nailed straight on the nose. He flinched, but still continued the leer with his eyes wide open.<H-hey! I-i.. I'm not gonna let you hurt me!>
Joel had knowledge Raptor had a great amount of potential, and now it's time to prove it. "Okay, Raptor! You can go all out! This is your first battle, and we don't need any mess-ups!" Joel tried to exert as much support as possible to Raptor, and he wouldn't let out on him no matter how insane he'll drive himself doing it. He wanted Raptor to be a confident Pokemon, even if it were to be gradual.
Now, if this works, the Meowth's attacking ability will be significantly weakened from fear. You always have to have your eyes open while attacking- and that's just what it's doing. Hopefully Raptor can charge forward with an unexpected Scratch.. unless, that is, I could try to attack it from the air! Of course! Joel's idea may completely change the condition of the battle, or may daunt it even further.

Meowth smirked as his attack drove Raptor out of the grasses. Now they would have to use a different tactic, one that was easier to counter. Instinctivly, Meowth drew back a step, keeping his paws close to his torso like a boxer. The best offense was a good defense, afterall. Theodore grinned proudly as he saw his Pokemon taking inititive.
"Go Meowth! Another scratch attack!" This descision was made quickly while the Totodile was still reeling from the last attack. Theodore pushed his glasses up his nose once more, a little annoyed this time. Why did he never have glasses that fit? Concentrate, Theo. The boy ordered himself. If I'm lucky, this attack should catch him off balance-Maybe even a critical hit. But if he dodges, I'll have Meowth use growl next.
But as Meowth lunged forward again, he stopped dead in his tracks as he locked eyes with Raptor's leer. The Meowth suddenly found himself frozen with fear, unable to remember what he was supposed to be doing, or realize that he should move out of the way before an attack. A shiver went down Meowth's spine as he stared helplessly into his adversary's eyes.
Theodore was frantic. "Meowth, what are you doing!" He shouted in alarm. "Use Scratch! Use Growl! Don't just stand there!" But Meowth was oblivious to his trainer's cries.

Joel pointed his finger. "Now, Raptor! Instead of taking to the grass, take to the skies! Jump!" Raptor, having listened to the command, finally forgot his timidness for this battle. He jumped upwards, signaling that Joel had to act fast before he landed. "Now, aim while it's dazed and scratch!" Raptor began kicking his feet as he was in mid-air, and then had a good look at the Meowth's forehead, right under the strange coin on its head. He slashed upwards, much like a boxer would uppercut. Hopefully, this would do substantial damage to the Meowth, enough to land a critical hit. After this attack, I'm sure the Meowth would regain composure and retaliate. When that happens, I've got to withdraw and leer once more. It isn't customary to have him Leer right now, however, seeing as I have to do this like chess- turn-based. Joel suddenly received a whiff strange whiff of an experience. Suddenly, he found himself in a world of fluctuating waters. This world is very strange. It has twists and turns as you go on with your life. You've just got your first Pokemon, and even more, started your career as a trainer. You've gone from a fledgling son of a sailor to an adventurer in only a day, and it's only been a few hours. You're in a battle, aren't you? Yes, you are. It may end now, or it may end longer. Raptor.. He seems to be warming up to you, but don't stop. Further your bonds. Am I.. talking to myself? You're in a large plains, fighting a trainer. It's been long since you've touched land, you must feel great. I may not be able to stall you here for long, but know this: No trainer, not even you, has found something to be repetitive. Work harder. Move smoother. Joel woke up from his trance-like state. He held his head in confusion. Ugh.. it's like I was eating some sort of funky cake. He realized that no time had passed. In fact, Raptor was about to land on the ground. "Oh!" He shook his head. "Raptor! Conceal yourself within the grass!" Raptor did so, instantly after he landed on the ground. He burrowed himself within every single blade of grass, in order to hide himself even better. He moved slowly backward, so that even if the Meowth scratched forward, it would be hard to reach him unless his claws were sharp enough. Raptor himself began to think. The feeling.. It's insane! Is this really what a battle is? But.. if it's a battle, are we still friends? Am I still friends with that Meowth? Why do we have to fight? Wait-wait! Never mind! I've still got to do this! Joel heard a bit of slightly frenzied rustling from Raptor, until it got very quiet. Maybe his first battle is a bit too much for him.. I don't think I should push him too far. "D-don't forget to watch yourself too, Raptor!" [559 + 523 = 1082]

Meowth had regained his composure just as Raptor's claws raked across his face. He screeched in pain and failed wildly with his paws, hoping to land a hit, but his claws found only air. Finally the Totodile's weight was off him and Meowth fell back on his rump, breathing heavily.
Theodore gasped. "Meowth! Meowth, get up!" Had he been knocked out already, or just trying to catch his breath? He couldn't be out yet! Meowth was tougher than that! Wasn't he? The boy let out a deep breath as his Meowth struggled to his feet, panting, his front paws grasping his knees. Looking back, Meowth smiled weakly and gave his trainer a thumbs-up.
I've got to work fast if I want to win this. Theodore thought determindly. Meowth is almost done for, and his Totodile still has a lot of fight in him. So I'll have Meowth hang back until we know where Totodile is, then charge in for a scratch attack. The plan seemed desperate. In fact, it was a last ditch effort to pull through with a win. It would be Theodore's first win in a while. He couldn't mess this up again.
"Alright Meowth, hang back a bit and catch your breath!" Theodore called to his Pokemon. "Then once you can tell where he is, go in for a scratch attack!" Meowth sighed dejectedly. What's the point? We're going to lose anyway. Why don't we just surrender? But he obeyed his master's orders none the less.

Joel retracted his hand back. This could be very bad, if Raptor didn't know he was being attacked from the behind. However, fate intervened. Simply, Raptor was only slightly grazed by the tail. Nonetheless, it did damage. Joel sighed a breath of relief. "Phew.. he's still okay." He shook his head. "Now! Let's end this together, Raptor!" Joel stepped forward. "Dash around, and intercept with the best Scratch you can try!" This might not work right. I'm sure Theodore would finally think quickly and stop the attack, but we've got to try! It's a big opportunity, and it looks as if the Meowth is accepting inevitability! If Raptor doesn't manage to land a hit, it leaves a wide open spot to do a strong trade of damage. He shook his head. But I've got to have confidence in Raptor! He can do this! "You can do it, Raptor!" Feeling cheered on, Raptor amiably dashed around the suddenly seemingly drained Meowth. He bounded as fast as possible in order to get a good spot behind him, and take a good aim right behind its strangely corpulent head. <I-I think I may do it!> Raptor took a good aim, and took a small jump. He held his tiny arms in a cross, and moved them forward- much like the attack X-Scissor, except weaker. P-P-Please! Work!Joel was on pins and needles. This has to do it! I know it will! I don't care if it's just one battle, or if it's the battle that decides the fate of the world! He just HAS to hit this one! It's simply.. simply.. too much of an opportunity! He knew Theodore had the potential to make a final burst and repel the attack, yet for better or worse, he's going to charge forward with Raptor on his side. Joel... Are you going to do it? Will you win this one? In fact.. Why are you so intent on doing so? You can always attack the next turn, but why is now so important? None of us are in a dander, and none of us are in a hurry. Theodore did well, but I'm sure he's going to lose now. That Meowth of his was also pretty cunning- pretty quick witted, he did pretty well. Congratulations. B-but.. You're only adding pressure![1082 + 406 = 1488]

Again, Meowth turned too late. The mock X-Sissor hit him full in the face, scratching his coin and knocking him back. His creamy body dissepeared into the light-colored grass, and this time he did not get up. I failed again. Meowth sighed as the world started to go black. Sorry, Theo. Maybe next time... The darkness closed in on him and Meowth fell back in to unconsiousness.
"No! No no no, Meowth!" Theodore hesitated a moment, waiting for his faithful Pokemon to respond. When he didn't, Theodore ran forward to collect him. Even if Meowth hadn't been knocked out, by running out onto the field Theodore signaled that the battle was over; he had lost. "Meowth, return." He sighed heavily, holding out a PokeBall. The cat-like Pokemon was engulfed for a minute in a red light before dissepearing into the ball.
Theodore let himself be dissepointed again, then looked upwards at the sky. We'll definately win next time. He promised the puffy white clouds scudding across the sky. For now, he had to be curteous to the victor. "Great job, Joel!" The geeky boy congratulated him, adjusting his glasses and holding out a friendly hand. "That was a good battle. You and your Totodile fought well." He threw a warm glance over his shoulder at the little blue Pokemon.
The bespecticaled boy gazed down at the ball in his hand for a moment, as though pondering what he should do next. Pokmon center, right. "I need to get Meowth to a Pokemon center." He announced, looking up at Joel. "Maybe our paths will cross again." Theodore smiled. "But I won't lose to you next time." He added.

Joel smirked. "We.. We won." Raptor was hopping in delight. <We did it! For the first time ever, we did it!> Joel let out his hand, and gave a good handshake. "Wait! Wait!" He stopped for a second. "You got most of it right. We battle when our eyes meet, and we go to the Pokemon Center when we lose." He looked down for a second.
"However, don't forget that the winner must receive money from the loser. Regulations and protocols of the Pokemon League require it to stimulate the economy in Remoor." He held his hand out. "Please, follow regulation." Raptor was confused at that point. <What's.. money?> He turned his head for a second, and then realized it was a simple Trainer thing. He shouldn't get in the way.
Yeah.. the currency of Remoor.. Wait a second. Oh, crap! "Don't forget to pick up your allowance, Joel. You'll need it for traveling in Remoor." "I know, I know! I've got it, I'll be fine. I could have got money from my parents over at the port! ...Oh, well, there's no turning back anymore. He winced a bit upon thinking of it, but then stopped.

Theodore flinched slightly. It wasn't that he'd been trying to skip out on paying up, he'd simply forgotten. It had been a while since he'd battled anything but wild Pokemon, and you didn't have to pay them. He gave Joel a nervous grin a and began to dig through his bad for a minute.
After a moment of rummaging, Theodore pulled out three hundred crumpled PokeDollars. He quickly tried to smooth them out in vain, then handed them to Joel. "Sorry about that." He apologized hurriedly. "It's been a while since my last Trainer Battle. That's three hundred there for you, so you can go by yourself something pretty." Theodore laughed at his own dorky joke and gathered up his things once more.
Kneeling down for a moment, he patted Raptor gently on the head. "Good luck to you too, Raptor. I hope you become a great battler someday." Theodore straightened up again. "I'd like to battle you again when you are." With that last word, he saluted Joel and hustled away back towards Barkwish Town.

Joel gladly accepted the 300P, and watched him run off. "Sort of a peculiar kid." Raptor nodded, and felt warmth inside that other people support him as well. <M... Maybe I shouldn't be too afraid.> Joel can help me, right? Then, Joel decided to take a look around, this time, with Raptor walking and following him, not wearing him as some sort of hat. "There'll be many more battles after this... I know it!"
Joel, however, stayed in the route. He and Raptor took a leisurely break, allowing Raptor to heal his minor wounds, and for Joel to take some well-needed rest. He reclined under a tree, where he sat down with his arms folded. Meanwhile, Raptor was trying to practice attacking by constantly scratching the tree. However, he felt something different.
Suddenly, he squired out a blast of water from his mouth. It nailed Joel right on the back of his head. "Ow! That.. hurt!" He looked back at Raptor, who was quivering, as if he thought he did something bad. "Wait.. Do that again, except on the tree." Raptor squirted another blast of water on the tree. "That's it! You've learned Water Gun!" Joel smiled. "This'll REALLY help!" Raptor made a toothy smile in approval.
Joel took his laptop from his bag, typing on it a log of his first victory and first day as a trainer. "Aaand.. there we go." Raptor looked at the laptop with great curiosity. <What is that thing?> He shook his head. It must have been ANOTHER Trainer kind of thing. Joel was crossing his fingers for a hope of a Dia's appearance. Their ability to cloak themselves in invisibility could prove quite useful to him.
