Megs and Cheyenne were both walking out of Barkwish Town and into the area known as 'Route 1'. This was the first of all routes that would lead people to the next destination. Megs was feeling a great sensation as she took her first step onto the route. She breathed in and breathed out. Cheyenne imitated her trainer and took in the great air. "Feel good, don't it, Chey?" Megs said, smiling down at the Chikorita. "Chika," Cheyenne said.
There were different kinds of wild Pokemon living on Route 1, but the question was which of these different Pokemon would appear before the newbie trainer and her fellow grass-type Pokemon? Megs wanted her first catch to be on the first route of her journey. But it would have to be a Pokemon that Cheyenne would agree with and become good friends with. And not only did wild Pokemon lurk the route, but there are also trainers ready to battle in what are known as Pokemon battles.
Megs has never been in a Pokemon battle, or seen one in reality. She's dreamed a couple of times of her beating a strong trainer and seen Pokemon battles on the TV at times. But now was the real deal. She couldn't mess it up instantly. Megs took in another deep breathe and continued to walk on the path of Route 1, Cheyenne right beside her.

Two beady black eyes followed the progress of trainer and Pokemon through the tall grasses of the Plains, peering out of a tree not far ahead of them. Two beady black eyes filled with curiousity and amusment, though others of their kind may have looked upon the pair with malic. These two would be the perfect adversaries for this young Spearow to test his skills on. Though not totally inexperianced to the ways of the world, Spearow was always looking for a chance to get stronger.
Silently, Spearow spread its wings and pushed off from the brach where it had been perched. It gave a loud cry of "Speeearow!", zooming over the heads of both Pokemon and trainer. The wild Pokemon landed lightly in front of the two, wings still spread and beak open slightly in a challenge.
<Prepare yourself, Chikorita!> Spearow screeched. Without waiting for a response from the grass Pokemon, it launched itself forward again, catching the wind on its wings and gliding smoothly across the ground. As it flew, the Spearow's beak began to glow a sharp white color. Once close enough, the bird-type Pokemon drew it's head back and brought it down towards Chikorita's head in a Peck attack.
But in the attack, Spearow lost it's balance and fluttered clumsily to one side while trying to back off. With a startled "Oomph!" it dropped to the ground in an undignified bundle. Burning with embarressment, Spearow fought to untangle itself from its own wings and right itself once more.

At the sight of the Spearow, Megs motioned to her Chikorita to get ready for battle. But as the Spearow came crashing down in a hurdle, a smile stretched across her face and short giggles came from out of her mouth. Cheyenne began to roll on the ground and laugh at the poor bird Pokemon. It was bad enough it had made a horrible and embarrassing entrance. But feeling a little sorry for the Pokemon, Megs quickly quit her giggling and changed into her more serious side.
Cheyenne still laughed on the ground, tears escaping her eyes. "Come on, Cheyenne." Megs said, trying to resist the laughing. "It's time to get serious. This is our first real battle. We can't screw up, kay?" "Chika...chika..." Cheyenne said through laughs. Once she gained self control of herself, she stood back up on all fours and eyed the Spearow. <Look at this guy,> Cheyenne thought to herself. She spread her feet out more and readied for a command from her trainer.
"Alright, then, Spearow! You best get ready to feel the pain through out your body!" Megs exclaimed, pointing a finger at the Pokemon. "Chey, use your Tackle," Megs commanded. Cheyenne nodded her head and began running towards the Spearow in a fast pace.

Shaking dust from it's eyes, Spearow looked up in alarm to see the Chikorita charging towards it. It was still rather dazed from its tumble to the ground and wasn't able to get out of the way in time. A pained grunt escaped his beak as the grass Pokemon slammed full-force into it, knocking the Spearow off his feet and skidding back a few paces on its rump.
But this time Spearow righted himself quickly. <Don't bask in your glory too long,> It snapped angrily, clicking its beak. <That's the only hit you'll get in!> Strong words. But can you back them up? The Spearow mocked himself. Of course I can! Spearow gave an angry snort and once again charged at its adversary, glowing beck outstreatched. And it didn't falter this time.
Knocking it's head back as it grew closer, the Spearow let out another fierce cry and brought his beak down over Cheyenne's head. After the attack he fluttered away again, much more gracefully this time, and landed carefully on the ground agin. <Take that, Chikorita!>
(Remember to count your words for experiance points~.)

Cheyenne fell to the ground in pain from the Peck attack. And because she was a grass-type and Spearow was a flying-type, she was the one in a disadvantage. But that didn't stop her from getting back on her feet. "You ok, Chey?" Megs asked, concerned. The hit was in close contact and did a great deal of damage. Could Cheyenne still go on after that? Cheyenne stumbled back onto her feet and nodded at her trainer. She lifted a paw and saluted Megs. <You're gonna pay for that!> Cheyenne yelled at the Spearow. Her footing was a little bad, but she managed to keep standing on the spot.
Cheyenne glared at Spearow in a mean way, anger growing inside of her. Although Cheyenne was somewhat girly and cheerful, she didn't like getting picked on so easily. Her blood rushed and her eyes twitched. "Let's see how you handle this time," Megs said to the Spearow. "Cheyenne, run after the Spearow. Don't attack it. Once it tries to hit you, dodge and then use your Tackle." Megs said. Cheyenne liked the idea of running towards the Spearow. Even if she wasn't gonna attack it, it seemed real fun to chase a chicken.

The Chikorita was suddenly charging again! Alarmed, Spearow took to its wings again and swerved out of the way. But Cheyenne came after it! So Spearow began to gain altitude, climbing higher and higher in an attempt to confuse the Chikorita and her trainer. If it could get high enough, maybe they would forget the Spearow and he could dive in for a surprise attack.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Deciding on something different, Spearow folded its wings to his body and plummeted back to earth. It was a risky move, requireing perfect timing and the ability not to blink as the ground rushed up at it. Terror grew deep in the belly of the Spearow and he tried to close his eyes against the wind, but that could be a fatal move, closing one's eyes.
Finally, when it was only a foot away from the Chikorita on the ground, the Spearow opened his wings once more and caught the wind again. It zipped forwards, just skimming the tip of the leaf topping Cheyenne's head. Convince that this move had effectivly faked her out, the Spearow made another sharp turn and came barreling in towards Cheyenne at full speed again, beck alight with another Peck attack.

Both Cheyenne and Megs knew the importance of this battle. Even if it was with a wild Spearow. The first battle was always your first lead to victory or defeat. And Cheyenne didn't want Megs to feel bad about the battle all the way to the next stop. Plus, she herself never had been in real battles since she'd been captured by the professor at the lab. This was a perfect time to test her skills and see what she was made of
She ran at the bird Pokemon unafraid and confident. Her eyes focused on only it and that was it. As the Spearow flew into the air, she kept running forward after it. It had gotten quite annoying after awhile with the Spearow just flying in the air. How was she supposed to hit it? Finally, it made its attack to her. <That's it, come to me,> Cheyenne thought.
Cheyenne was ready this time. Everything was falling into place. The Spearow came closer and closer to Cheyenne, she kept still, waiting for the perfect moment. Megs watched as Spearow flew to Cheyenne. Then... "Now, Cheyenne! Dodge the attack," Megs shouted. Just as Spearow came at her face, she jumped out of the way and tackled the Spearow. Her body hit full force onto the Spearow's. She then landed back on the ground near her trainer, smile spread across her face.

<Oof!> Spearow grunted as Cheyenne slammed into him from the side. The blow knocked it clear out of the air and knocked the wind out of it. For a moment, Spearow lay motionless on the ground, panting and gasping and trying to regain it's breath. Finally its lungs seemed to open again and the Spearow was able to breath again. It shakily pulled itself to its feet and attempted to look intimidating. <Lucky shot!> The Spearow insisted.
Spearow was becoming rather angry now. It clouded his judgement and made him want to just rush back in for another attack-Which was exactly what he did. With another fierce cry, the wild bird charged forward, staying on the ground this time. It extended its wings to make itself seem bigger and zipped in for another Peck attack. All these close-range attacks were risky, but Spearow was beyond caring.
It was so blinded by rage that it didn't even realize that it was off by a couple inches when charging at the Chikorita. Spearow blew right past the Pokemon, its beak only grazing her side. It gave a screech of frustration and skidded to a halt about a foot behind Cheyenne and turned quickly to charge again.

"Come on, Chey. Let's finish this battle!" Megs said, her hands clenched in fists. Cheyenne looked up to Megs and nodded. "Chika," Cheyenne said. Cheyenne began to feel somewhat tired after what had happened so far. She thought of the rest she would have in Megs's arms. <That would be quite enjoyable.> Cheyenne thought to herself. Cheyenne focused back into the battle and watched as Spearow came towards her. She jumped out of the way and ran behind the Pokemon.
Megs was not sure of how the battle was going. From her point of view, it looked like both Pokemon were gonna fall to the ground in exhaustion. She started thinking about what would happen and the outcomes. "Spearow may collapse and it'll be our victory! Then the two of us can continue our journey." Megs thought. "But what if Cheyenne fails to win the battle? I don't even know what to think of if it won. I wonder if dumplings would be good to eat after this..."
<Right-o, Spearow. Here I come!> Cheyenne yelled and slammed her body onto the Spearow's again. <Hah!> she said, coming to a stop once she landed on her feet. She breathed in heavily and watched the Spearow's next actions.

Spearow was winded and tired at this point, its beak wide open and is breath coming in gasps. It wasn't sure how much longer it could go on. The next blow to its side knocked Spearow flat on its rump, kicking up a cloud of dust as it did so. The dust gave it an idea-An idea that reached it even trough its tired mind. If Spearow whipped up enough dust from the dry ground, maybe the Chikorita would get confused and Spearow could get one last hit in before passing out.
Putting its plan into action, Spearow began to wave its wings wildly. The effort of such an action made it dizzy, but still Spearow stuck to its plan of blowing around as much dust as it could. Just as he suspected, a little dust cloud formed around the two battling Pokemon, obscuring each other from view.
But Spearow had an ability called Keen Eye. It was still able to locate Cheyenne's green body through the dust cloud, even if Cheyenne couldn't see it. Spearow took a step forward and faltered slightly, exaustion setting in and making its legs feel like lead. Summoning the very last scrap of strength in him, Spearow rushed towards the Chikorita for one last ditch effort of winning.

Hope was at the very end of the tunnel through Megs's eyes. But then, after what she thought would be finished, the Spearow stood back up on its legs. He formed dust from the ground that shuttered Megs out from the battle. "Hey, hold on! That's not fair!" Megs said, trying to see through the cloud of dust. 'This Spearow sure has a lot of energy and spirit to come this far,' Megs thought, stepping aside from the dust and grabbed a pokeball from her belt.
Cheyenne coughed from where she stood and rubbed her eyes. She couldn't see anything and didn't now where Spearow was at. Of course she knew that he would attack her. It was the perfect moment, and Cheyenne didn't know if she would make the hit from him. She continued to rub her eyes and cough. The dust was getting clearer after awhile and Cheyenne could see points of light and dark figures. Some where trees, her trainer Megs, and a bird-like Pokemon coming straight at her.
Cheyenne ducked with her front feet covering her head, preparing for the attack. <I won't make it...> Cheyenne thought sadly. <Sorry, Megs,>
"Hold it, Spearow!" Megs suddenly yelled. Now that she could see the shadowed figures through the dust, she enlarged her pokeball. "Go!" Megs yelled, throwing the pokeball at the bird figure. If they couldn't win the battle, then it would be nice to capture the Spearow. That would add a new Pokemon to her team and besides, she liked his personality.

The Spearow continued his charge towards the Chikorita, his stick like legs carrying him slowly towards her. WIth a <HAH!> he raised his beak to deal the finishing blow, only to be knocked in the head , by something, round, large , red and white. There was a moment of shock, a brief period of confusion, and silence then the thing oepened up. The beam of red light engulfed his shivering, oxygen deprived, body in a wreathe, and then he disapppeared from view.
The Spearow was confused at first, and wanted to know where he was at. Yet no one was around to answer. When he yelled for help his voice echoed back, then he saw bright sliver of light nearby, flapping his tired wings he tried to make his way to it.
ONE.
The Sliver grew closer, as did the Spearow, and he reached theo ther side of the pokeball, lthen het hrew his body against the side.
On the exterior, he Pokeball was hopping around like a drugged rabbit,, rolling pside down, and gliding for short periods of time.
TWO. The pokeball's exit hole got smaller, much to small for the large bellied Spearow to fit through. With a angry shreik he settled against the side, waiting ofr the victor to decide what she wanted of him while he stewed in her magical prison.
THREE.
Congratulations you caught a Spearow

"Gotcha!" Megs said happily, running over to the pokeball and Cheyenne. <What? What happened?> Cheyenne said, confused. She looked up at Megs who was picking up a red and white ball. <Wait a moment...> "Looks like we got a new friend, huh, Chey?" Megs said, releasing the Spearow from its pokeball. A flash of white light came from out of the mouth of the pokeball and formed the Spearow Megs had just caught. The Spearow got its color and features, looking up at Megs, his new trainer.
"Hey there, Spearow." Megs greeted to the bird Pokemon. "You feeling good?" <I've just joined sides with my enemy, I couldn't feel any better.> Spearow replied, turning his head in another direction. "Well, I'm not sure what you said, but, um... ok! You don't mind if I give you a nickname, do you? I mean, Spearow is cool and all, but I'd like to call you Wing instead." <Sure, that's fine.> the Spearow said. He turned towards his new partner, Cheyenne. <I would've won if your trainer hadn't captured me,> <Oh, sure. I was totally scared-my whole body was shivering.> Cheyenne said sarcasticlly. <And you know it was! Don't think I didn't see you ducking down from me.> <Whatever, I was just trying to hide from your clumsiness.> <Oh, yeah!>
"Hey, hey, hey! What are you guys fussing about?" Megs said, breaking the two Pokemon apart. "We may have been in a fight before, but now you should be getting along together, not starting another fight. Ok, since you both are probably real tired," Megs paused and pulled out two potions from her bag. "I'll use a potion on the two of you, kay?" <Good, I'm tired.> Cheyenne said, jumping at Megs's feet. Megs sprayed the potion over Cheyenne's body, emptying the whole bottle. <Do I feel relaxed!> Cheyenne said cheerfully. "You're next, Wing." Megs said, reaching for the Spearow. <Well... since I am real tired and you owe me a treat for causing this hurt, I guess I'll let you spray some on me,> Wing said in a small voice. Megs pulled Wing closer to her and sprayed all the potion in the bottle on his feathery body.
Wing shook his body and cooed. Cheyenne rolled her eyes and jumped onto Megs's legs. "Ok, since we're done with this and you two are refreshed, let's get going." Megs said. She reached for Wing's pokeball and returned him inside. <Good riddance,> Cheyenne said, standing beside Megs. "Okie dokie, time to continue." Megs said, and the two began walking again.
