Jareth had biked out into the woods with the intent of training Kas and Toxin for the gym they would be challenging in just a couple of days. He was actually quite excited about the prospect of getting his first gym badge, but he hadn't told anyone his plans... Not that he had anyone to tell anyway. Oak had gone off on her pokemon journey, and he hadn't seen her since, and... Well, his mother was never home, and his father didn't care what he did so long as it didn't get in his way at all. Still, the badge would be its own reward, and it would take Jareth one step closer to his eventual goal... Whatever that was. Did he want to challenge the Elite Four? Maybe... He hadn't really decided. Maybe he'd become a scientist eventually... But honestly studying pokemon that way didn't interest him much either. He prefered studying chemistry than the way pokemon worked. Still, it was an option.
Kas ran alongside the bike as usual, staring determinedly ahead at the narrow trail they were following to get further into the woods. He actually hadn't come here to look for pokemon. He had come to have Kas and Toxin train against one another in the hopes of getting stronger just before the gym challenge came up. Jareth had brought food with him, as well as his usual books just in case they needed a break. He had also been collecting berries for the past day or so, to replentish his pokemons' health when they got too fatigued. He had the whole training session planned out so far. Kas and Toxin would warm up a bit, spar for an hour or so, then they'd break for lunch. After lunch, it was another warm-up, followed by sparring for another half hour, and then some individual strength and agility training. Hopefully by the end of the day they'd be ready to face Damien.
Jareth slowed his bike to a stop upon finding a decently-sized clearing, and after propping it up against a tree he let Toxin out of his pokeball. The croagunk stretched, yawning, and looked up at Jareth lazily. Kas, meanwhile, seemed more than ready to train. His eyes were narrowed determinedly, and his muscles were tensed in preparation.
Jareth wasted no time. "Kas, take a run around the outside of the clearing." he said. There were a lot of roots out there, and it would test Kas's agility. Kas nodded and ran off, his large ears pinned down against his back as he moved. Jareth looked at Toxin next. He didn't know much about the toadlike pokemon, but he planned to learn his capabilities now. "Okay Toxin, I want you to get up in the trees and start circling the clearing, branch to branch." The croagunk saluted his trainer and walked over to a tree trunk. For a second or two, Toxin simply stared upwards into the branches, but then he leapt up about four feet and caught on to the bark, repeating the leaping motion about three more times to get up to the branch. He hopped a little higher, then began his run from tree to tree, leaping across branches and only occasionally overbalancing. When he did, the croagunk would catch onto the branch and swing back up, or pull himself up if swinging wouldn't work. Jareth nodded in approval, then called out to Kas. The little nidoran came into the clearing, skidding to a halt before Jareth. "Kas, attack the tree he's in and try to knock him down." Kas turned around, watching Toxin's movements through the trees. Then, he charged. His attack hit the tree hard, shaking it, but Toxin was already in the branch of another tree. Kas tried again, three more times, but each attack missed. Finally, he charged the tree ahead of the one Toxin was in, hitting it just as Toxin landed on its branches. The bough shook, and Toxin flailed his arms wildly as he tried to stay in the tree, but eventually he fell downwards. He would have hit the ground hard, but Kas darted underneath the falling pokemon and caught him... Mostly. Toxin's weight buckled Kas's knees, making him fall down and making the two poison-types land in a disgruntled pile.
Jareth couldn't help but chuckle at the picture the two of them made together. He waited for them to get up and brush themselves off, then said, "Good job Kas. You too Toxin. I want to try something else though... I have a challenge for you. I want you to to bring me back some things. You have to bring them back one at a time, and they can't be from any place less than twenty feet from this clearing." Kas and Toxin nodded slightly, waiting for the objects they had to bring back. "Toxin, I want you to bring me back five pine cones. Kas, you need to bring me five round stones." It wasn't pine cone season, and the forest floor was covered with leaves, so it would be difficult for both of them to find their objects. "Ready... Go!"
Kas and Toxin ran off in opposite directions. Kas was running towards a stream he'd seen on the way here, while Toxin was running towards a huge evergreen tree about two hundred feet away, which probably had at least a couple pine cones stuck in the branches. Kas reached the stream first and jumped into the icy water without hesitation, ducking his head under the surface to pull out a mouthful of pebbles from the bottom. He dumped them on shore and looked them over. Most were smooth, but none were actually round. He snorted, deciding to take a different approach. He jumped back into the water and began to dig, stirring up the bottom and the stones buried underneath the mud. When the dirt had been swept away by the current, there lay two rounded stones. Kas grabbed them both and left one on the bank, rushing back to bring it to Jareth. He dropped it before his seated trainer's feet, then turned around and raced back to get the second. Another trip, and he was back at the stream, digging through the silt once more.
Toxin, meanwhile, was climbing up the trunk of the evergreen he'd seen before. He got about halfway up through the branches before he found any pinecones... But there were three of them here! He knocked them all onto the ground and picked them up, hopping through the forest until he was almost at the clearing. At that point, he stopped and dropped two of them, bringing only one to Jareth. He ran back and picked up the second, then simply sat down on a root for about a minute before rushing back into the clearing and pretending to be out of breath, then rushing back out. He planned his strategy as he held the third pine cone, counting off the seconds to another minute. By the time he'd raced into the clearing again, he had a plan, and he ran off the other way this time.
Kas was at the stream again, keeping to his original strategy. It was working quite well, actually. He found three more stones, and brought them to the bank, beginning his marathon race to take them back to Jareth one at a time. On his third trip, however, he skidded to a halt with the stone in his mouth, having spotted the scene in the clearing. Toxin was seated on a small rock, a pile of pine cones in front of him. Five pine cones, in fact. Kas put down the rock and snorted his displeasure, turning his head away as he walked up to Jareth and sat down.
Jareth, meanwhile was standing up again. It was time for sparring. "Okay guys, get ready to spar." Kas was on his feet immediately, while Toxin got up slowly, with much sighing and even a little groan. Kas snorted, but said nothing. "Now, I'm not going to give you any instruction, okay? You two just duke it out, and come to me if you need a berry or anything." Kas and Toxin both nodded and moved to either side of the clearing, facing each other.
They ran at each other, but dodged aside at almost the exact same moment. Kas skidded to the side and leaped forward, trying to skewer the croagunk with his horn, but Toxin dodged to the side with a somersault and spun on the ground, aiming a hook kick at Kas's jaw. The little nidoran jumped backwards, but immediately moved forward again and aimed a poison sting at the croagunk. This time, Toxin couldn't quite dodge out of the way. The attack hit, and Toxin shuddered upon feeling the effects of the poison entering his system. That would make him faint before they got back to town, nevermind before the end of the battle... He whined, annoyed, and shouted, <What'd you have to do that for?!> as he hopped over the nidoran's back, bouncing back to throw a poison jab at the nidoran. Kas was hit by the barb, but wasn't poisoned by it (thankfully, else Jareth would have had a tough time getting out of the woods). Kast drew back, using focus energy to raise his chance of hitting a vital spot, while Toxin danced around in little circles, using rain dance to create a muddy playing field that he was more familiar with.
Once that had been done, Kas leapt forward again, aiming a double kick at the croagunk. It completely missed though, and the little nidoran spun out in the mud, being hit by the mud slap attack that Toxin threw at him. Both of them paused in their fight as Jareth called out "Do either of you want a berry?" but neither went over to receive the healing. Instead, the fight continued. Kas stood up and jumped into the air, aiming a peck attack at the croagunk. It hit dead-on, but was partially nullified by the brick break attack that Toxin had used at the same time. Both pokemon fell to the ground, but it was Toxin who got up first, hopping about a few times before fading from view entirely. Kas looked around, muscles tensed and ready to dodge, but he never saw the croagunk coming, and was hit from behind by the faint attack. Kas was unsteady on his feet, but he aimed another double kick at Toxin anyway. This one hit, but just barely. Toxin reared back and flung a huge glob of mud into the nidoran's face with mud bomb, then followed it up with pursuit as Kas tried to get into a better position to attack. Both hit squarely, and Kas fell down, quite beaten.
Jareth was quick to return Kas to his pokeball, and had to move quickly to give Toxin a berry before he fainted from the poison as well. The rain was going away, but the clouds above hinted at another rainfall to come soon enough. It looked like it was time to end the training session. "Well, we've got to end early, but that's alright." he said with a shrug. "Come on Toxin. You can ride in the basket of the bike. Just eat another berry whenever you feel like you might faint." Toxin nodded and clambered into the basket, munching on one of the berries as he held the others in his hand. Jareth gathered up his things quickly and began to pedal out of the forest, hoping that their short training session had been enough to allow him to defeat Damien the next day.
