Randy walks determinedly up to the Lab, her sneakers make a crunching sound on the gravel path and occassionally a "pop" as one is sent flying. She arrives at the Lab door, made of steel. She takes in the log-cabin-painted-white which makes the front of the Lab. She pauses for a moment, she feels rather nervous, as she hasn't met Professor Mahogany yet.
Then she notices the rather large sign by the door, and the note under it. She decides to read the note, even though she already has her starter in mind for this region she still feels obligated to double check (the availability of her choice and) the other choices too.
She then turns her attention back to the door, although slightly intimidating, she boldly knocks on the door.

The door seemed to swing open of its own accord. A soft blue light seeming to illuminate the handle from the inside. Once the door is fully open however the light flickers out and dies, the ony lighting in the room coming from the three rows of bright halogen lights on the ceiling. These banished all but the shadows in the corners to the far left and far right of the main room. It was in one of these corners that a robotic, emotionless voice broke out: "New trainer eh?Come in, just dont stay to long. The professor will be with you when he pleases. "
A wave of a three fingered hand later and the door closed with a audible CLICK~! the doorknob returning to its vertical position right after the click. bill's glittering black eyes surveyed the newcomer, nothing to special, nor anyone dangerous. So she shouldn't be that much of a bother, although having anyone invade his space was a bother.
Minutes later the professor strode in. With a smile plastered on his face he seemed to break the oppresive silence that was clouding the room. "Welcome to the lab." It was then that Bill remember that those words were supposed to be the first he said, ah well they were to welcoming to the random annoying teenagers to allow to come out of his mouth. So he'd stick with get out or knock.

Randy entered the Lab. She was a little surprised by Bill (and the door closing behind her), and not sure what to say to him, so she said nothing. Then the Porfessor arrived, and she felt more at ease. He seemed friendly enough anyway, what with that big smile and all.
"Thanks, my name is Randy." She managed to say through her growing nervousness (he was so tall!), then added, "I'm here for my starter Professor."

A low murmur, barely above a whisper echoed through the lab. The emotionless tone, obviously Bill's was obviously annoyed that the girl had to state that, and said so in that whisper, which resembled the following: "We had that established already..." The Alakazam went back to his work soon after, and seemed very determined to ignore the new trainer. Of course he was lacking in hard work, due o the fact that unless he was working on a rubix cube, or proofreading a puzzle he didn't find things very mentally stimulating.
The professor ignored the rude comment and went on talking, Leaning on his cane, not because he couldn't walk but because he didn't want to be leering over the girl. The slight smile still audible in his voice he began talking: "Do you have any ideas?Or any questions about the pokemon we have to choose from?" Normal questions. Of course they were rather vital. Extrememly vital he hoped her attention hadn;t wandered off. His often did when he was oing the same things day after day as his job tended to entail.

Randy became more bold, as she began thinking about the Pokemon--the reason she was there after all. The bright lights in the room showed her that the Professor had a kindly, if somewhat busy, face too. "Well, I was wondering if I could have a Torchic, Professor?" She said. "I've given it a lot of thought, and I think a fire type may give me a good challenge to raise. But I must admit I was sorely tempted by your listing of Chickorita as well. Grass-types are usually so reliable, you know. But I think a fire-type may be a good place to start, and Torcic is so adorable--well, it's hard to say no. Besides, I've seen many well-raised Blazeiken, and they are so strong and graceful, and well I think I can handle a fire/fighting type too when the time comes."
She hoped she would not sound too wierd too the Professor, but she had been studying Pokemon for so long that it was rather like a second nature to her. She also hoped that she hadn't offended the Alakazam, Bill, but maybe he was just like that normally she thought to herself.
"Oh," she added, "I almost forgot to mention, but if you have a male Torchic I would prefer one, please."
Randy continued, after another moment's pause, "I was wondering if you'd mind giving me a starter pack too, Professor? I only brought the bare essentials in my backpack here--a warm coat, rain poncho, soap, food, etc...--I hope you don't mind. A map would be just the thing, and I was wondering if you'd mind marking the gym cities on it for me? As I'd like to get a lay of the land and start making plans for the gym challenge in this region--preferably with my new Pokemons' help, since they'll be involved too." She hoped, again, that she didn't sound too wierd or nerdy to Bill or the Professor, she felt a little embarassed--having said too much? She couldn't be sure, people were harder to read than Pokemon; but this Alakazam showed little emotion except that he was too busy to be bothered with a little trainer like her, and she wanted to obey his wishes about leaving quickly. She didn't like bothering people or Pokemon, if it could be at all avoided.

The professor nodded through the girl's little speech. She knew what she was talking about, or had studied the subject a bit. Most new trainers learned all they could about the starters that were available before they arrived. Which allowed them to make a wise choice. Smiling at the girl he grabbed the pokeball to the far left of the fire pillar and held it out in his hand. "We mostly have male starters. They are usually easier to handle then the females.. .. .." It had been a while since anyone had requested a specific gender to go with their pokemon. When they did ask he was more then willing to oblige. Much to Bill's disappointment.
Listening to the girl his smile widened. She knew what she was doing. He hadn't seen any trainers so far with a way to protect themselves from the rain. Most of them were so close to home that all they had to do was restock, some were just too excited to think about it. A bad choice on their part. So far though they had all been resilient enough to make it on their own without any help. Not one had died or been eaten yet. That was a good thing, they all seemed to be able to handle it. "The gym's are all marked. Also we always hand out starter packs. Before you go...are you sure about your choice in Torchic. Not undermining you, just curious."
Bill said nothing. The Professor was trying to make her stay longer, he wasn't curious. As usual. The professor really needed to go to town sometime, maybe Bill could take care of the lab for a day, as long as he got over his loneliness problem, and stopped inviting trainers to meals, he wouldn't mind being semi-polite to a few of the teenage brats.

Upon hearing that the gyms were marked on the map Randy breathed, "Wow, that's great!" She thought over the Professor's other questions, then said, "I am pretty sure Professor--I mean if you had a Bulbasaur or a Ponyta I wouldn't mind starting with one of them, but your sign says that you're out of Bulbasaurs, and I didn't see Ponyta listed. Do you have a suggestion then?"
She was a little puzzled by the Professor's statements, but willing to discuss the matter further--maybe she'd learn something interesting from the Professor's great and famed wisdom. Her parents had spoken highly of him too.

"Not really. I was just wondering if there were any other available pokemon you wanted to ask about." It wasn't that he didn't think she deserved one of the others, but her personality seemed to fit the starters better then the pokemon in the backroom. They weren't as loyal and outgoing, most of them anyway. She seemed too friendly to not have a friendly pokemon around her. Tapping his fingers on the fire pokemons pillar he turned to stare at the girl again, his smile still in place.
"So Torchic was it? Oh yes if you wish I can name the gyms, and label them by type for you." This wasn't fprbidden. No one had ever bothered to ask him for any kind of information like that. While he couldn't tell her strategies he could at least inform her what she was likely to encounter first on her journey towards the Elite four. Dragons, this region was odd due to it choosing to put one of the hardest tyes to beat out there first. The professor wagered this had something to do with this region's routes being extremely dangerous after that town, and if yo ucouldn't beat the hardest type at the lowest level ,then you would not get very far with your pokemon.

"Really? That would be great, just what I need to plan my next move! Yes, Torchic would be great. Um, what kind of personality and history does this Torchic have, by the way? Any unusual markings or food likes/dislikes?" Said Randy. She wanted to be prepared to best care for her new starter. She also was beginning to look forward to her first gym battle--Randy began to glow with her contained excitement, she loved to raise and train Pokemon, and the battles that followed. She took the ball from the Professor when he offered it, and stood there holding it as she asked her questions, trying to sense the life inside that ball and what the future held for them.

"Well this fellow is just a little shy('little'). Kind enough though. As for unusual markings his right wing is missing the yellow base." At first the professor had thought the Torchic defective, and that he had been born without one of his wings. The truth was soon revealed however after the Torchic hatched and ran away from the professor, wings spread out and flapping. Turning back towards Randy the professor nodded to Bill. With a sigh the psychic type waved his hand and sent a yellow bag spinning across the floor its contents clunked ominously inside. Luckily only one or two things were glass.
Reaching inside the bag he pulled out the map. Then a pen from his left pocket. Quickly he scribbled a few things on the map, such as names, and of coursetypes. Stopping at the fourth gym he decided he had helped her enough, she already had a advantage.

"Thanks so much Professor! That should get me started here, and more. Thanks Bill." She said as she took the smaller bag and managed to fit it inside her backpack, she took a quick look inside to take quick stock of what she now possessed, with one hand, then she turned to the pokeball in her other and pushed the button, calling out, "Torchic come on out!" as she did so. Then she attached the pokeball to her belt and took the map from the Professor's outstretched hand.
By then Torchic was recovered from its initial disorientation from being suddenly released from its ball. Randy turned to the Torchic (her Torchic) and said, "Hi Torchic, I'm your new trainer Randy. I'm pleased to meet you."
Torchic blinked with sleepy eyes up at the young girl and said, "Tor-chic," and then yawned.
Randy smiled, Torchic would be just the friend for her on this new journey, she was sure of it. "Any last words of advice Professor, Bill?" She queried, straitening up and looking expectantly at the pair.

The professor replied, just as Bill allowed the door to gently swing open. His voice telling her to leave, or implying it really. He didn't mind her though. Bill just didn't like anyone but the professor. Well sometimes even the Professor annoyed him. "One more peice of Advice. Use your pokedex, it comes in handy if you want a pokemon with a certain move." A certain egg move to be exact.

"Thanks again you two!" Said Randy as she turned to leave, then walked out the proferred door with Torchic following in her wake. "Guess we'll head for the Pokemon Center in town first, then on to the Plains. Bye Professor, bye Bill." She waved then hurried off down the gravel path to town.
She was off again, on a new adventure in a new region, and this time without her twin brother tagging along--it felt kind of strange, but good to be starting fresh. Of course, she missed her brother, Camden, but she knew he'd be fine in the other region he was exploring on his own too--he had his Pokemon with him after all.
