Aubre looked up from the steps of the pokemon center once again. Her face was serene, or at least what was visible past her drawn up knees, and non descript black hood. Sitting nearby her Father's Surskit tumbled through the air in a somersault, and pulled a face trying to bring a smile to Aubre's face. Seconds later the Surkit felt black cotton brush her underside as the redhead kneeled down to pick her up, allowing her eyes to meet Aubre she was surprised to see a nervous smile across her lower face. "This time I'll get past the police station." She mused taking a deep breath and closing her eyes. Her feet slapping against the gravel path as she walked forward.
The sharp barking of the Growlithes and Arcanines caused her to pause, and then run. This time instead of running home Aubre had started the long run fro from the Barkwish Pokecenter to the lab. In her arms her Father' surskit urged her on. Before she knew it Aubre found herself nose to nose with the door of the lab. Her hood had somehow managed to maintain its position shadowing her face, but it could hide the smile that was forming on her lower face. She had made it, but the last few times she had came here that had been the easy part. The hardest came when knocking, many of the rejected trainers had fueled her horror of the lab, claiming that Bill was a monster out to kill. Hr mom and dad had assured her different. As has her brothers, but they were family and it was their job to make sure everything was alright, and tell you lies once in a while. Only after Nurse Joy had informed her of the truth in the matter did she decide it was time to try her luck again.
Peering quickly at the list she lifted her hand to knock. She would never have dreamed of entering anyone's home without knocking first, and really had no idea why the sign had to be there in the first place. Slowly her hand fell back to her side, no knock had been made. Finally Aubre reached out her hand again only to have the hyper Surskit to jump from her arms and slam into the door. Sending a echo around the lab, and making sure that Aubre couldn't claim not to have knocked.
'SKIT! Why'd you do that--oh dear. I --oh my. Now what?" She stuttered. What if they had thought the loud knocking rude, what if they kicked her out for it? She didn't want that. Not to mention she had no idea what pokemon she wanted yet, if they asked she'd have no idea what answer to give. How foolish would she look then. Had they seen her all the times she had stood in front of their window and ran!? Oh dear, this was important!
"what happened to our Aubre? If I ever see that darned boy..OOOOOOO." The Surskit muttered angrily stomping her spindly blue legs on the ground. If her trainer's daughter froze up she'd make the choice for her! She was tired of coming back again and again, only for Aubre to hear a distant canid howl and go scurrying back home like a mouse into its hole in the wall. Aubre had never been like that before! Before she had been polite, and friendly to all pokemon.
The Surskit's threat might not have had any basis in reality before, due to the boy's jail sentence. Yet recently his bail had been posted. Which meant he was free..but it hadn't been any member of his family who had let the boy out. It had been in a email the police had sent to his parents, some rich beneficiary had done it. Aubre would never leave her house if she found out he was free, so they had to do this now!

Every once in awhile, something rare and amazing will happen in this world. Children are born, wars turn bitter rivals into strong allies, heroes save the day. Today's rare and amazing event was slightly less spectacular.
Professor Mahogany had actually answered the door, rather than his assistant Bill.
The aging and kindly man slowly slid the door open, smiling as he gazed down at Aubre and the Surskit that accompanied her. "Hello, there! Is there something I can help you with? I'll bet you're a new trainer. Well, don't just stand there in the cold. Come on in." He ushered her in, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder and pushing the front door open wider so she and her accompanying Pokemon could step inside. "Tell me young one, where are you from? Oh, could you step over to that table? The first step is the most important: you'll need to choose a starter." The professor brought a tray up from under the table, quite the multitude of Pokeballs inside. "We've got quite the selection for you today. Just to make things easier...do you have a favorite type of Pokemon, young one?" He asked her, that warm grin not once leaving his face. He hoped he wasn't overloading her with information...he always got so excited when someone new entered the lab.

The Surskit was the first to take the Professor up on is offer to remove themselves from the cold. Her long legs made sounds similar to rain drops on a tin roof as she skittered sideways into the room. Glancing up at the desk housing the grouchy Alakazam she couldn't help but smirk, he wasn't that scary. "Nice lab. Really extravagant, might I add. Clean as well." Nodding her head she turned her body all the way around and trotted toward Aubre who was peering around the professor and the doorway to look into the lab. "the only thing in here that will bite you is me. Come on Aub."
Taking a deep breath the girl nodded her thanks to the professor. Strolling rather slowly over to the table and sitting down in a drawn out chair. She had to admit the place didn't smell like the hospital she had spent over half a year in. It kind of smelled like coffee, and a little bit like fresh rain. Not at all unpleasant. The Alakazam was somewhere in the corner, and it took a lot of her will power not to stare in that direction, he probably didn't like being stared at. Currently her eyes were on the nice checkered floor and her tennishoes.
At a cough from the Surskit Aubre looked up. Realizing she had been asked a question she quietly, and politely answered. Not sure if this was a test or merely a question.
"I did used to like water-pokemon, but....I like them all as long as they don't resemble Houndooms, Arcanines...or growlithes." She didn't want to be to demanding of the Professor. No that would be very rude, and Aubre hated to be rude. Or to be much of anything that attracted notice to her.Underneath her Hood her cheeks burned a bright pink. She felt so stupid, saying she was frightened of a Little thing like growlithe. Thy evolved into bigger things, that breathed fire and had fangs, like Houndooms. At least that boy was not getting out anytime soon to come threaten her again.
The Surskit was looking around in awe of the large building until her eyes alighted on a pile of old newspapers. One of which talked about the boy being let out on bail and 'excellent' behavior. She scoffed at that idea, no doubt the guards had been to scared of his temper to be anything but polite to him. Poor Aub couldn't find out. Skittering to the edge of the table she alighted on the desk top, and promptly nudged the paper back into the pile. "It was falling out." Was the only answer she supplied. Casting a nervous smile at all in the room, she hopedi t wasn't to suspicious.

The Professor nodded his head as she spoke, thinking quietly. She doesn't like Houndoom or Arcanine...hmm...probably related to a traumatic event in her past. Hmm...the best way to conquer fear is to meet it head on. He could give her a Fire-type like Torchic...that could solve the problem, perhaps. But...it would be best for her to decide on her own. He'd give her the option.
"Well, I've got a few Pokemon here. Why don't you sort through them for the one you want?" He had picked the more advanced tray for her; if she were to conquer her fears, she'd need variety. How that made sense, he wasn't sure, but...whatever. "Your choices are rather varied, I think. Selibulb, Ralsius, and Grista, who are exclusive to this region, as I'm sure you're aware. We also have starters from other regions here, for your convenience. Totodile, Chikorita, and Torchic. I'm afraid we ran out of the others...they were rather popular. But...just because I like you, I'm also going to offer upp Igglybuff, Smoochum, Beldum, Machop, Gible, and Statilee to you. Statilee, as it happens, is also exclusive to our region. So, Miss...uh...what did you say your name was again?" The Professor chuckled lightly, a little embarrassed that he had gone through the whole speech without asking the girl for her name.
Bill peeked up from the pile of work on his desk and shot daggers at the Surskit on the table. Don't make a mess or I'll turn you into an overnight bag. He threatened in a dry voice. This place is messy enough as it is without your help, thank you very much.

Aubre seemed to zone out for a moment. She knew most of those pokemon, and had seen a few of them on the road. Grista was immediately out, it was a growlithe with wings! Ralsius didn't really cure her taste, Totodile were to notorious for biting, Smoochums evolved into Jynxs, Beldums well she'd leave that beauty for someone else she wasn't worthy of him,Torchics scared her, and chikoritas were to boisterous. That left the machop, and the Statilee.
She had seen the Statilee's once or twice before. Usually in captivity or at the pwoerplant where she used to go to learn about electric strategies. Machop's were hardy pokemon, it was a very hard choice between the two. So she couldn't make it yet, besides in heri ndecisive mnd both of their negatives were starting to shine through. A machop might be very aggressive, and a Statilee's teeth were almost as bad as those that Totodile called their own. Allowing her head to fall back to looking at the floor her green eyes raced back and forth. Which one?Fighting type, or duel dragon type? Both had their obvious negatives, mostly to do with personality.
Aubre sighed and lifted her pale hand up to her face. No matter what decision she made it was sure to bite her later on. Even the pokemon might decide to try biting her itselfi f she didn't pull some semblance of courage together. The only way to choose was to look at both of them in the light of day, although Bill and the professor might have some effet over how they act it couldn't be that much. "Pro-----fess--o-or, can I see the machop and Statilee please. i mean if not that's perfectly..fine. I just think its better to know what thye are like before i pick........." his statement had drawn her face up from the floor, now her eyes raced to the shadows, what other kind of pokemon did this place house? Vicious ones?
The Surskit smiled up at Bill. "I was cleaning up thank YOU very much." Unlike Aub she wasn't afraid to stand up to a grouch, no it was fun when your oppenent was cruel and you just smiled at them, usually caused some sort of confusion.
"SKIT!" Aubre yelped, raising her voice for the first time until it was above a whisper. Now what? Now what!.? What if that rudeness had made Bill mad, oh how she wished her dad had sent his rather quiet Chimeco, the one that could soothe almost any extreme feeling, except of course for Aubre's never relenting shyness.

"Certainly, young lady. I want you to make the most well-informed decision you can." He kept up his smile and left his desk, approaching the table and grabbing the two pokeballs she'd asked to see. With bright flashes of light the two Pokemon within were released, both standing proudly on the table. The facade of 'pride' didn't last too long, though, the Machop's eyes glancing around the room boredly as he used his pinky finger to quickly pluck something from his nose, the Statilee yawning and laying down on the table. So they weren't the most awe-inspiring representatives of their species; all they needed was a little training and discipline.
Bill's eyes glowed bright blue, and Skit slowly lifted a few inches up off the table. Don't test me, bug. Lucky for you, I'm up to my whiskers in paperwork. Make yourself scarce.
The Professor shot a somewhat angry look at Bill, giving him the body-language that said 'silence'. Neither of them seemed to notice Aubre's outburst.

"Oh I can fly. I am not testing you, oh grumpy one." With that and a cheeky wave the Surskit jumped off the desk.Landing on her feet all four of her legs slipped out from under her at once, leaving her looking liek a child learning how to ice skate.Lifting one leg she managed to bring herself up, only to have it slip out from under her again. WIth a sigh he slammed all four of her feet down on the well polished floor and brought herself back shakily to stand up straight. She didn't look like the proud former contest winner she had used to be at the moment. No right now she looked like a newly hatched Ponyta.
Aubre meanwhile allowed her eyes to the Machop. They were brave pokemon, and extremely loyal, he was per--. Maybe not, that habit is a tad bit to gross even for me. Turning her eyes back to the Machop she watched as it gazed uninterested around the room. She may have though that would be her pick, seeing as she had used one at the old school. that had been the pokemon that had started all her problems. Maybe later she'd run into one, they were not as rare as the Statilee after all. Besides this one seemed to uninterested to spend time with her.Nor liten to her orders that sounded more like a mouse squeaking then those of fighting.
So what if they other one was almost asleep? That meant he wasn't dangerous at the moment, and wouldn't rip her hand off. She knew that if she didn't pick now she never would. Turning her eyes from the Statilee to the Machop she hoped her decision was right, it couldn't be that bad of a pokemon if it had just laid down to sleep. Maybe it was just tired after playing around all day. taking a deep breath, she really hoped that he wouldn't say no due to the Dragon types later power she piped up: "Professor mahoghany sir..II think..I'll take the stati-------lee."
on the Floor the surskit sighed. "Finally, see you didn't get eaten after all. I told you." Her eyes though held something akin to sadness. Now sheh ad to go home, and be the retired pokemon she had been for years now. Aubre wouldn't forget to drop her off, no that would be very rude on the girl's part. To rude for her to do.

"An excellent choice, young one! They are quite rare, you know. I hope you two get along well." The professor continued his incessant smile, returning the two Pokemon from the table to their containers and giving the one that contained her new Statilee to Aubre. "Here, this is also for you. Your own travel bag, filled with plenty of supplies to help you get started. Use them wisely. Your Pokedex will be found inside that bag, as well." The Professor handed her a black knapsack after she received her Pokemon, then gave her a quick bow. "May fortune smile on your travels! Please, enjoy the rest of your day. If you ever have any questions, don't be afraid to contact me." He put the tray of Pokeballs back under the table and walked past Bill, patting him on the back. "Come, my friend. Let's continue our work in the back." Bill rolled his eyes at the Surskit before getting up from his desk and following Professor Mahagony to the back room. Yeah, whatever. I'm concerned with the sate of the young Bulbasaur, their pods don't seem to be getting enough sunlight... Bill and Mahagony began talking research before even leaving the room, their voices growing quieter as they walked away, leaving Aubre to show herself out.

"Thank you. B--ye" Aubre waved rather wearily. Hastily sticking her hand back in her Hoody's pocket she walked forward. Clipping her new Statilee's pokeball to her belt. Hopefully he'd be asleep a little while longer. So she would name him before meeting him, and hope the name didn't give her any bad luck, it was a name in one of her favorite Greek myth's one that popped up quite a bit. The tale of how easily a hero was defeated if his weakness was found, even if it was unlikely that she would ever be cocky her first pokemon's name would tell her not to be.
"Eh Achilles?" The Surskit zoomed around at her feet as Aubre opened the door waving to the girl sadly she skittered off towards the pokemon center, to see about getting bak home before next week. What kind of name was that? That was like naming a child 'FAILURE' ah well it would be unwise to tell her not to name him that, she would chose to name him something really corny if she did. Hopefully the little fellow wouldn't hurt her Aubre. She really didn;t want that.
When she neared the barking kennels she tightened her hand around the smooth red ball attatched to her belt. Of course she was distracted as she neared the wrongly named Isabella plains, it was a forest! What numbskul had named it. "Oh dear me--well here we go." With a deep breath she sprinted past the center and into the cover of the woods.
