"What a positively miserable day..."
The low voice could barely be heard over the sound of the pouring rain and the almost continual crashing of thunder. The sky was dark grey, even though it was high noon, and only occasionally did the sun dare to peek out from behind a space in the heavy stormclouds. It didn't shine much light down, although it did help to make the air even more humid for the few seconds that it heated the earth. Really, the temperature wasn't so very horrible today. Thanks to the continual rain, the temperature had dropped over 20 degrees since yesterday, from nearly 90 to about 65. It had forced many people to turn off the fans in their houses, and allowed one particular traveler to wear his more typical long sleeved shirt rather than being forced to wear cooler clothing.
Puddles covered the ground, making the small ruts this town called a road little more than shallow streams flowing with rain water. As such, Jacen walked beside the pathway instead of in it, in the interest of not getting his shoes too soaked. Beside him walked his xatu, Kairee, holding a plain black umbrella over his head. It was a fairly wide umbrella, so it was big enough to cover the two of them at once. Jacen walked next to her, his cane poking into the muddy ground slightly with each step as he made his way towards a particular building in the town. This building was the only reason this town was even on the map, and the only reason Jacen had actually bothered to come here in the first place. That reason was just coming into view around the edge of the nearest house: The Barkwish Town pokemon lab.
He paused for a moment, smiling to himself as the lab came into view. It had been more than a little annoying to be flying here on Hermes's back in the rain, but if all went well - and his information was correct, which it usually was - Jacen would find this trip to be quite productive indeed. He and Kairee began to move forward again, reaching the end of the relatively short street in about ten minutes. More than a couple people had looked out their window at the strange pair, but no one was out on the street with them. The lights in the lab were on, which was a good sign; Jacen would have hated to have come all this way only to find the lab closed due to a rainy day. At last, they reached the door, and Jacen took a glance at the list of starter pokemon hanging on the door before raising the hand not actively holding his cane and knocking hard four times. The sound reverberated into the lab beyond, clanging loudly on the metal door. Jacen glanced down at his companion, tossing her a wink as she felt his eyes on her and looked up at him as well. "Here we go then." he said. The xatu merely nodded.

The knocks echoed through the lab. The trainguil gentleness of rain on the roof, falling hrythimically was ruined by Jacen's raps.
The Professor was outside in the back, and much like a chikd was stomping through puddles, the baby water pokemon chasing after him, a bright green umbrella was spinning aboce his head. It wasn't often one ran into rain without thunderstorms in the start of summer's heat. The knocks cuased him to blink, and he began walking towards the lab. Upon reaching the door he snapped the green umbrella close with a loud "CLAP" and laid it by the doorframe. Pausing h went to shoo in the baby pokemon, and paused. They did seem to be having some fun.
Bill glred at the door, willing whoever stood outside to leave. Then he heard the quiet "clop" "clop" of Jame's food as they kthumepd across the tiled floor. So with a sigh the Alakazam let the door open , a sleu of rain followigng the action, causing him to let out a sigh. "I am not mopping tat up--this idiot can slip and break hisn eck for all I give a damn." The Alakazam had been lke this for years, so the Professor paid his hollo, hateful words no heed.
Both of his gentle honey colored eyes snapped to the Xatu beside the man. This was no new trainer. "May I help you young man?" Jacen may not have been young, but he was younger then the Professor's fifty years by a good margin. The Alakazam reached back towardsh is shelf, and pulled down a rubix cube, absentmindedly solving it, and tossing it back where it had formerly been.
The Professor then saw the cane, but said nothing about it to Jacen. After all that would have been very rude. He nodded to the Xatu, and glanced briefly at the rain pouring down. "COme in, come in, no need for anyone to catch a cold. You as well Miss Xatu." James said his ever present smile pasted on his face.
Unknown to theProfessor the bored looking Bill was riveted on the conversation, it had been a long time indeed since a adult with a okemon had entered the lab. Especially in the middle of a rainstorm. Outside a ominous peal of thunder growled, taken mayhaps as a omen? Or just a sign of mroe bad weather to come? Either way, this didn't look good.

Kairee glanced up at Jacen a moment later, finally speaking for the first time since they'd arrived in town. "You are certain he has the information you're looking for?" she asked, speaking aloud in her soft voice. Her tone, however, was not soft. It was sarcastic, in fact. "He is less than mature, as you know-" Jacen interrupted her here, his voice quiet as well so as not to be heard from behind the door. "Maturity is not an indicator of intelligence... Necessarily." he stated. "And actions are not necessarily an indicator of maturity." he smirked, calling to memory a certain Pravus administrator that he had met recently. Those plans, unfortunately, had fallen through, but the visit had certainly been eye-opening in a certain sense. In a way, Jacen was rather glad the plans had fallen through, for the extra time had allowed him to plan this very trip out to Barkwish Town.
Jacen was considering raising his hand to knock again, but before he could translate the thought into action, the door swung open with a creak and a decidedly grumpy voice was heard, saying something about Jacen falling and breaking his neck. Jacen took note of that very carefully, marking where the slick, wet spot on the floor was. Jacen smirked slightly as the professor referred to him as "young man." His smirk was not unpleasant, however. He had decided that there was no need to frighten the poor professor. As such, he made sure to keep his smile close-lipped, lest he terrify the man by showing him the blood-red fangs he had acquired in the last few years. Jacen had enough odd features about him without displaying obviously predatory features. It occured to Jacen that he had actually been here before, quite a few years ago when he had been planning on being a pokemon trainer. He had stopped here with his father on a sort of business trip, and while there he had received a starter pack of his own - sans pokemon, of course. How old had he been then? 13? 14? Certainly no older than that. There was no chance the professor would remember him by face, but perhaps by name...
Nonetheless, Jacen had no fear of giving his true name here. He was not here on any ill purpose, after all. All he wanted was a little chat. His eyes stayed on the professor's face, noting the downward slant as he stepped forward and his cane tapped against the hard floor for the first time. Kairee stayed a moment to close the umbrella and leave it by the door, then she shut the door behind the both of them, leaving them inside the well-lit lab. "Thank you very much." he said, nodding his head towards Professor Mahogany in thanks. He took a couple more steps, just to get past the end of the small puddle on the floor, then looked between the professor and alakazam for a moment. Kairee would keep an eye on him, he knew. That was the reason he'd brought her in the first place rather than Thor or Gabriel - who of course were with him as well, but less obvious. "Professor Mahogany." he said, "Might we have a chat?"

The Professor looked at Jacen; blushing realizing that it was rather odd watching one of the best minds in Remoor standing in a room, in am uddy puddle just like a child come in out of the rain. After all the umbrella had been implemented after the sprinkle had turned back into a downpour. Leaving him soaked i nwater that was less then crystal clear. With a chuckle he turned to Bill. "Can you get our guest a chair Bill." The Alakazam rolled his ees. James that is encouraging him to stay. He telepathically messaged his friend of well over 4 decades. Oh come now. Don' t be rude, and shush, no reason for you to get mad. After all the have done nothing wrong. Bill didn't take to kindly to being told to hush, but get a chair he did.
The chair hovered in from the kitchen, and slid to a screeching halt a few feet to the left of Jacen. "Sit." Bill stated bad tempered, then there was a gron from the back room. Followed by a deep bass voice: "Bill most humans do not take kindly to being treated as pets, please sit in the chair, I am sure James would appreciate it." About the time Jacen would have been there the Venusaur who had spoken would have been able to move, and not lying in the backroom, almost as unmovable as the building itself.
Bill rolled his eyes, and turned to his bookshelf, picking out al arge encylopedia, he began leafing through it. Shaking his head, and pulling out a highlighter, he circled all the errors he found. Most were more then typos.
Th Professor smiled. "My pleasure--that is Bill--my--....well--partner professor." Bill knew just as much as the Professor about pokemon, he wasj ust below on the ladder of social interactions. Which was understandable given his nature.
At the question the Professor blinked. Looking like a owl behind his rain speckled glasses. Then he spoke, criousity ringing in his tone: "Well yes I suppose we can." Looking for someplace to sit he waked over to his own desk and sat down. Turning his head he watched as a large green head poked its head out into the hallway. "Belair what is it?" Then as quick as it had appeared the Venusaur disappeared, making little noise for something his size. Which was rather surprising considering he topped 1000 lbs.

Kairee was doing exactly what Jacen had let her out of her pokeball to do; keep an eye on Bill, the alakazam. Of course, Kairee wasn't visually paying the slightest bit of attention to the other psychic-type. Her eyes were on Jacen and the professor as she idly pondered exactly how Mahogany would react to Jacen's topic of discussion. However, her third eye - proverbially speaking, of course - was fixated almost fully on Bill. She sensed every nuance of psychic power coming from him, including the telepathy he was sending to the professor. She didn't try to intercept, simply sending Jacen a signal that the two were communicating. He glanced down at her, but said nothing, and simply turned back to the conversation at hand. A chair floated out from the other room, drifting quickly across the floor before being dropped with a screech onto the tile a couple feet from where Jacen currently stood. Despite the alakazam's ill-tempered command - to which Jacen narrowed his eyes just a little bit - he did not sit down. He moved toward the seat, but the venosaur took his attention temporarily. The pokemon was not actually visible, but his voice was not so very far away either. Probably it was somewhere in the back room.
Jacen nodded slightly as James introduced the alakazam. "I know." was his simple reply. There was a short pause, then Jacen finally decided to introduce himself, seeing as these two were clearly not suspicious (or curious enough) to demand to know who he was. "Forgive me for failing to introduce myself." he began as Kairee stepped up to his side. "I am Jacen Zidar, and this," he nodded towards the xatu, who was watching the professor serenely. "Is my partner, Kairee." Jacen idly thought of how confused others might be if he ever developed a love interest - unlikely as it was - , for he tended to use the word "partner" for a great number of different relations. His thoughts didn't stray for more than a moment or two, however. "You seem exceptionally tense, James." he noted, his bright yellow eyes meeting the professor's for the first time since he'd walked through the door. "You don't mind my calling you James, do you? Really, I'd rather this not be so formal. I'm not here to bring you bad news or discuss your taxes." He gave a good-natured smile, close-lipped once more, and glanced towards the back as the venosaur finally made an appearance, if only for an instant or two.
Now, the real conversation could at last begin. Kairee was kind enough to move the chair closer to the desk so that Jacen could sit next to it, and she stood just behind his chair as he sat down, landing a little heavily on the wooden seat as his legs gave out again. At this point, he was slightly excited. The implications of this very conversation were huge, both for Pravus and for him. If he managed to capture articuno - which was the legendary pokemon he most desired to find, at least for now - the DNA gathered from the legendary bird might well put him on the way to being able to walk again for the first time in... How long had it been? Fourteen years now, unless his memory served him very wrong. Nearly half his life, in fact. The prospect of being able to toss his cane aside permanently was something Jacen would do just about anything for - including put himself before the wrath of an ancient and powerful pokemon such as articuno.

The ALakazam raised a eyebrow at the Xatu's actions but otherwise said nothing. Deciding that James wold yell if there was any trouble, he began to pull of random rubix cubes from his shelf, soliving them with a few deft flicks of the wrist, and replacing them back on the shelf. It was obvious they would never be shuffled again. Bill didn't like doing the same one over again.
The Professor blinked, but otherwise said nothing. It had just been a formality, most did know about Bill, especially anyone who had been a trainer more then a few months. But he decided that the man had just been trying to save him the effort, and took no offense. "Pleasure to meet you Jacen, and you as well Kairee." The Professor took no notice of the word "partner" after all, he had been going to say that, but any chance odd reaction fron the man in front of him had made him add "professor". "Do I? No I am fine , really. I usually do not have adultsi n here though--IT has been a looong time." At this Bill grunted his agreemnet.' Too long james.
The Professor shook his head ith a smile. "Not at all! I prefer that actually Jacen. Well that's good--bad news is well, never pleasant. Neither are tax colltectors." Of course since Bill did all the taxes he never had a problem with collection agencies or the like. After all who argued with a Alakazam's math?
The Professor paused for a moment, and then asked his first quesiton of the day. "Since it is not bad--what is it you came here to discuss Mr. Zicar?" After all what was so important that this man felt the need to come in the middle of the thudnerstorm? What was so crucial that it couldn't wait another moment, or a few more hours at the most? Sitting down on the edge of his desk, he stared at the morph, pursing his lips he podered soemthing. What is he anywho?
