'Twas a sunny late spring afternoon, and the sun was sending wave after wave of heat down to Earth, showing that summer was not far off now. Most of the Pokemon were hiding in the grass or in burrows, to escape the heat, but some still lingered, showing off their perseverance by standing there in the rays.
Those few Pokemon were pretty much the only living things- excluding the plants- that were outside. That is, until a few seconds ago. A tall girl slowly dragged herself down the path in the Isabella Plains, stopping at the very edge, where the grass ended and the roads of Barkwish town began. Zephyra panted, bending forward and keeping herself from collapsing by holding her knees. A mile or so ago, she had seen the sign indicating that Barkwish Town was not far off, and in excitement, she had ran most of the way until the final stretch, where she just walked.
After a minute or so of resting, Zephyra got up, wiping sweat from her forehead, and gaping at the small town. She could hardly believe that she finally got here. A week ago, she had started her mini-journey and walked all the way from Starbright City to here, and she finally arrived. Feeling a burst of pride, she took a deep breath, and strode into the town, headed for the white building that was the Lab.
If she had seen how she looked like, she would have been a little embarrassed. She was a complete mess from all her traveling: Her color-streaked hair was all in knots and tangles; Her khaki shorts and her white shirt were covered in dirt and mud; Her shoes, which had been new before she left, were worn down and had taken on a grayish tinge; Her face had some grime and dust on it.
The building was a few yards away now, and Zephyra broke into a run once more, as if the Lab would suddenly disappear if she didn't hurry. She was now on the doorstep, and out of breath, again. With deep breaths, she looked at the sheet of available Pokemon, and she felt a twinge of disappointment. Trapinch wasn't on the list, it seemed. Back in Starbright Town, someone had told her that they gave away Trapinches at the lab. They were probably making fun of me...
Sighing, she lifted a pale hand and knocked on the steel door before turning the strange doorknob and entering. She wiped her feet on the mat, and looked around the strange room, and her gaze fell on the six Pokeballs. Pretty colors... Finally she mustered up her courage, and yelled out, "Hello? Anybody here?" She listened to her voice as it echoed for a little bit, and waited in silence.

The sun had left the Professor in a gardening mood. A spade in one hand, and a packet of berry seeds in the other he was leaning against the side of the lab. The large, straw, sunhat perched askew on his head. His weathered, and laugh line filled face was turned upwards toward the sun. A small line of holes dotted the side of the house, and a Diglett occasionally popped up along then eat row of indentations. James was glad to be outdoors, no doubt Belair had slipped out through the backdoor of the storeroom. No doubt he was now snoring fitfully in the bright sunlight, baby pokemon playing joyfully in the miniature jungle on his back.
Inside the lab Bill was grumpy, the sun bothered his eyes, and it was much to hot. Yet the Professor said it was not warm enough to turn on the airconditioning. Which was easy for him to say--he didn't have a layer of permanent clothing, and heavy scale like armor protecting his skin. That raised the tempature a few degrees. A knock sounded at the door, and a head popped in without waiting for the door to be opened, or for someone to say she could come in.
A smirk crawled across the Alakazam's snout. In his robotic voice, the one that drove many new trainers to panic he scolded her: "I didn't realize--I didn't think I had to include : and wait to be allowed entrance, underneath PLEASE KNOCK!" The Smirk grew, here was something to take his annoyance out on, and so very unfortuanately the Professor was gardening. So he wouldn't rush to her rescue like some justice crazed junky.
Which was fun.
James blinked, he could have sworn he had just heard a knock. Leaning around the edge of the building, he also could have bet that their wa a dust-covered shoe sitting on his front porch. The mailbox, and list obscured anythign else that might have been seen. "Well someonne's probably here." With a audible sigh he stood up, brushing dust and fresh fertilizer from his white lab coat. "Gardening will have to wait huh Digletts?" Smiling at the happy little creatures he began walking towards the house. Of course he was in no hurry to get back inside the odorless, sterilized blaring white of the lab. So he took his time, upon reaching the door he could almost feel the smugness emanating from Bill's corner. "Bill--I can deal with the trainer, go plant..." The Alakazam made no indication that he had heard, besides his moustache like whiskers twitching. Mostly from annoyance.

Zephyra was quite startled by the tone of voice that Bill used. She stared at the psychic Pokemon in wonder, never seeing an Alakazam before in real life. They look so much different than in a book... For a moment she felt ashamed, then said in a shy voice, "S-sorry if I was intruding. I didn't know that I had to wait to be let in..."
While she awaited a reply, her green eyes roamed around the room nervously, taking in the surroundings. She wondered what the many books were about, and what was behind the doors near the back. Then they flicked back to the Pokeballs uncertainly, wondering which Pokemon were which inside them.
When James came in, she became bewildered, wondering why there was a gardener here, and why Bill was told to go plant something. Is this even a lab...? "Uh... If you don't mind me asking... Is this the Lab?" She glanced once more at the apparel that the Professor had, thinking that she must have stumbled upon some plant nursery. And a weird one at that...

The Alakazam snorted. What a feeble excuse, using his voice like an eedle, he began to prod holes in her logic. "What kind of manners do parents teach their cildren nowadays--So if what you are saying is true-- when you knock on a restroom door do you just barge in without giving whoever is inside a chance to answer?" The Alakazam raised a eyebrow, daring her to say yes, if she did he would consider her a liar, and would send her outside bawling, if the shadow of James hadn't ruined his fun. "Well now--move--he can't come in with you blocking the door." The Alakazam explained, kmpatience, and annoyance edging into his monotonic voice.
The Professor stuffed the trowl into one of his pockets, pulliing off th thick green gardening gloves as he did so. Waving his hand he dismissed Bill's statement. "ignore him--he's photosensitive.." Pausing he realized the girl might not udnerstand. "The sun bothers him." Well mostly his eyes, but that lead to all of him being cantankerous and grouchy.
At the question the Professor's face became one of confusion, and then he glanced down at his dirt streaked clothes, then to the pocket holding the trowel. His normal kind smile cracked open and emitted a loud string of laughter. "Why yes--Although I do not look like one of the best minds in Remoor at the mome--" Then for the first time he really saw the girl standing in front of him. "Are you alright--you're filthy---you bring any replacement clothes?" Especially shoes, it had been the dirt covering them that had clued him off to someone's presence in the first place. "I am Professlor james Mahoghany--but enough about me--do you want to go get cleaned up? All that dirt cannot be comfortable." Pulling off his white lab coaat, and the garderner's apron underneath he showed that his brown suit was as stainless as ever.

"Uh..." For a moment, Zephyra felt like a five year old that was just being told off about something. "No, I don't. But this isn't a bathroom, is it?" She realized that Bill was just trying to taunt her, and so she decided to retort. She was starting to dislike Alacazams...
Then she turned to the Professor, relieved that this was the Lab, otherwise she would be very red in the face, and backing out through the door to find the actual Lab. "I know what photosensitive means." She forced a shy smile, feeling slightly irritated that she was treated like a little toddler. She kept her cool, though.
"And as for the clothes, I don't really have a second pair. I don't mind the dirt, though. All the clothes need are a short washing and they'll be clean." She shrugged in a carefree way. And it was true that she did not care about the dirt. A week of traveling in clothes like that had made her immune to it. And before the travel, she had always been exploring in places like small underground caves and the such. She was used to this by now.

The Alakazam sighed, he had given up. "I do not see why I try--but that was a comparison--if you want the truth if one of the dangerous pokemon out back injures anyone the insurance company would have our asses. And by opening the door if we were treating, or checking over one, you offer them a prime avenue of escape." Hopefully that was something she could understand, seeing as the comparison was much to high over her head. His tail lashed beside him in his cair, and he drug one sharp claw along the glass desk top. The squeak that insued hopefully giving every other occupant a headache as bad as his own. Now he was just angry, he didn;'t like insulting others in ways they didn't understand.
The Professor blushed sheepishly. "I was just making sure--Sorry if I offfended you lass." James stated, gently scooting sideways, he made his way into the lab, being careful not to scrape Zephyra on his way inside. "So you want to be a new trainer hmmm?" He questioned, a smile lighting his face once again. So far in his long career he had never mistook a new trainer for anything other then that, mostly because he had no visitors to speak of otherwise.
"Well--I do have a few replacements if you want. " He didn't mind dirt too much, ut he couldn't stand being like that in front of others. Of course if this girl was confident enough to do that, then MORE power to her. "So did you look at the list?" Currently the Professor was standing awkwardly in the middle of the room, his dirt covered hands linked behind his back, and hee was fidgeting. Oh how he wanted to be outside right now! Of course it was nice to have a visitor, and the sunny day made his smile stay where it was, on his face.

"Well, yes, but areas enclosing dangerous creatures always have a sign saying something like 'Danger, Keep Away', or 'Warning, Dangerous Animals'. That, and if they were vicious in some way, I could simply hear the growling of it behind the door." Zephyra finished her small speech, falling into a smug silence. This is rather fun... But then she clenched her teeth, the hairs on the back of her neck standing on end. The noise of the squeak sounded so... so... annoying! She hated sounds like that...
She listened to the Professor's words, and replied to the first few sentences with, "No offense taken. And no thank you. I don't need spare clothes. Like I said, all they need is a wash." She she smiled an awkward smile, not quite used to being fussed over at this age. When the second question was asked, she frowned, trying to choose which Pokemon she wanted.
"Well, yes, I did see the list... But I can't quite choose which one I'd like..." She bit her lip, glancing at the six Pokeballs. "Uh... May I see the Totodile and Chikorita, please?" She liked both of those from the list, and she was interested equally in both. But... she didn't know which would be a better first partner.

"They aren't hungry yet. Besides--the thoery of natural selection , would make those signs rather godo ways of cheating." The Alakazam then remembered that he had given up debating with this girl, and closed his snout again, drawing his claws across the desk once again. It wwas obvious she disliked it, which is why he kept doing it. As long as she annoyed him with her idiotic "logic" he would annoy her with his loud, headache causing noises.
"Alright--well the Pokemon center have washers for you to use--I wuld let you use mine,, but it's loaded at the moment." Pausing he listened to the girl, and slowly nodded his head. 'Totodile and Chikorita hmm?" This was not a question, more of a statement, and a thoughtful noise at the end. Reaching the two pillars he pulled off one pokeball. This one had a crescent shaped leaf on it, and another, this one had three pink triangles surrounding a white fang.
With a nod he released both pokemon. The Chikorita immediately snorted, and glancing around disainfully. The Totodile began to yawn, and sat down on the floor without even lookingat Zephyra. "Well these are the two I have currently." The Totodile then let out a obviously fake snore, and rolled over, narowly missing the Professor's cane as he did so. (WHERE HAS THE MUSE GONE?)[/blockquote]

Zephyra just sighed, deciding that Alacazams were going to be on the list of the Pokemon that she didn't like... as much. With a great amount of effort, she smiled through the squeaking, and directed her green eyes on the Professor, choosing to ignore Bill. "Thanks for the help." In her mind, she added a mental note to go to the Pokemon Center right after receiving her new Pokemon.
She inhaled quickly, watching the two might-be-partner Pokemon go about their 'usual business', as she guessed. She was a little disappointed in the Totodile. She expected something more... energetic than the blue shape that was just lying down. Zephyra had seen pictures of them in her little library of books, and they most certainly were not sleeping. As for the Chikorita... It seemed more promising than the water Pokemon that came from the same region, though it did seem like it had personality issues...
She bent down, her elbow on one knee, so she could get a closer look at them. Both were healthy enough, and nothing was wrong with them. The only thing was how they acted... She didn't look forward to having to deal with either a lazy Totodile or an antisocial Chikorita, but she didn't have much choice. There was, of course, the option of the other starters, but they weren't as neat as Totodile or Chikorita. "Hey, there... One of you is going to come along with me... Which of you wants to?" She tilted her head questioningly, waiting for an answer from one of them.

The Professor shook his head. a smile on his face. "No need to thank me. It was no problem at all." It was also part of his job requirement, if he saw a teenager with a porblem who wanted a pokemon he had to try and help in someway. Well if he knew what the problem was anyway, sometimes Teenagers were stubborn and tight-lipped. But if he heloped someone and asked for payment, it was grounds for a pink slip.
The Totodile opened one red eye, and stood up. Leaning forward he sniffed the human girl now knelt down in front of him. Well at least she was bowing like they were supposed to. Rubbing "sleep" from his eyes; it was more like boredom actually, he tilted his head and looked closer at the girl. This human was dirty, and smelled a bit, but she seemed submissive enough. Raising one clawed hand to his jaws, he began to pace back and forth across the room, tapping his chin as he did so. Much like Bill did when he was thinking.
The Chikorita stared up at the girl, sniffed her hand , and then tilted her head skyward. <You're not to bad--kind of ugly though--and you stink.> This personality was why this Chikorita had been there so long, but the girl couldn't understand her. The Professor blinked. He understood the gist of the little grass types words. "Now Chikorita that's not Ni--" The voice of Bill cut into the fray. "In case you wondering she said you were pretty, and smelt like a field of roses." Frankly the Alakazam was tired of the snotty little green thing. Everything for her had to be done seperately. WHich was really frustartating with 30 or so babies to feed, bathe, and play wiith at a time.

Zephyra frowned, listening to Bill's supposed translation. She didn't trust him, and the Professor was just about to say that the Chikorita said something that wasn't nice, so... She would decide that the Chikorita said something... not nice. The grass type was simply adorable, but... she didn't like Pokemon who insulted her.
She watched the now-active Totodile while he was pacing back and forth. Now it seemed, the Totodile was actually quite active. He looked really intelligent, too, and she liked that. The smarter the better, in her opinion. She bit her lip, focusing her attention between the Totodile and the Chikorita, contemplating their type advantages and weaknesses.
At last, after what seemed like ages to her, she finally said, "I think I'll take... the Totodile." She smiled at the lizard-like beast, and reached out to pet him.
((The want for a Totodile is too great. >.<;; Heh heh...))

The Alakazam leaned forward on his large plate like hands. The Chikorita hadn't played along, it acted as snobby as ever, that was one reason it didn't work. The other was that he didn't stay in character at all. Normally he moaned and groaned; and ground his teeth together while he handed out compliments. Yet he had been to eager to translate the Chikorita's "kind" words. Well I should brush up on my acting skills. Otherwie I will be stuck with this bitch of a Chikorita forever. Then he leaned back in his chair. What had happened had happened; there was ntohing he could do about it.
The Chikorita gave one last look at the girl, stuck her nose , or what she considered a nose, into the air and began walking towards the ktichen. <You stink to bad, and boy you were ugly.>
The Professor turned towarsd the girl, patiently awaiting her decision. "Totodile it is then." With slowl measured steps he walekd over to the water pillar. Then he leaned forward, and clasped his hand around the pokeball that was home to the Totodile. As he turned it over, the sticker on the bottom was momentarily visible. It was a teardrop shaped white traingle, surrounded by three smaller pink ones. This represented the teeth of the totodile, and the three spines on its tail.
Without pausing to dimish the strength in the throw he tossed the pokeball none to gently at Zephyra. "There you are..and by th door is your trainer's bag. So pick it up, and you." "Can get out, and not return to beg for more money. Goodbye annoying human child." The door swung open, and a bitter wind seemed to propel the girl towards the door. This wind was mostly Bill's psychic enegry. If he didn't throw her out, the Professor would make her stay the night.
But surprisingly the Professor didn't fight back. His weathered hand clutched around the trowel in his right pocket. His garden awaited.
