The ferry that Kassidy's parents had so kindly paid for wasn't really a ferry, as such. It was more of a small schooner, which pitched and tossed in the waves as they moved away from the coast that they might get to Barkwish Town faster. Nonetheless, Kassidy stood at the stern of the ship, holding her dufflebag over her shoulder and staring off at the shore. She was too far away to see her fathers from here, but she could still watched the monstrous building that was the city she called home recede into the distance. However, it wasn't too long before her restless legs called her to move and explore the boat. She obeyed, taking her bag down belowdecks and pitching it onto the top bunk directly in the middle of the main saloon. She might get rained on if a wave crashed over the ship, but her bunk was right next to the eating quarters, and if she needed to dry her clothes out there was the galley right nearby with it's huge stove. She wasted no time getting to know a couple of the sailors and greeting their pokemon, as well as absorbing a few tips on pokemon rearing from them. This was going to be a fantastic trip.
Over the next couple of days, Kassidy kept herself busy working on the ship. Unlike most of the other passengers (all fifteen of them), she actually helped out, and by the end of the five-day journey she was allowed to put on a harness and climb to the top of the mainmast to help furl the topmost sail with the help of the captain's primeape. It was a lot of fun, overall, and Kassidy got the opportunity to hang out with a lot of people she'd like to stay in contact with. Of course, that probably wasn't going to happen, but there was always the chance, right? She told them her last name and told them to look her up on the gym leader roster if they were ever in a town with a gym in it, then took her bag and bike and disembarked along with the other passengers, back onto dry land. She got on her bike and pedaled slowly around the town for a while, exploring a bit before she headed towards the lab.
The town itself wasn't very big, obviously. Its only real buildings other than houses were the pokemon center and pokemart... Other than the lab, of course. That was Kassidy's end objective, and once she was satisfied that she'd seen most of the town (and grabbed a bottle of water from the nurse at the pokemon center) she turned her bike and headed towards the lab. By now, it was just barely sunset, but she figured the lab would still be open anyway. It looked like there were lights on inside, although she couldn't see movement there. Still, it couldn't hurt to try, and if the professor wasn't in, she could camp out for the night and talk to him in the morning instead. Kassidy rode her bike right up the the door, dismounting and leaning the bike against the side of the building before knocking on the door. As she waited for it to open or for some signal that she could come in, she glanced over the list of starter pokemon.
What kind of pokemon did she want as a starter anyway? Kassidy had never really thought about it... Out of what they had, she'd probably choose a totodile... Or maybe a chikorita... It was hard to choose, really. She'd never thought of what pokemon or type she wanted to start with, only the ones she planned on having eventually. Powerful ones. As for a starter... She didn't even know what type to consider, although after being aboardship for a few days she was strongly leaning towards a water-type out of simple recent familiarity. Maybe the professor had something else other than what was on the door... Maybe.

A knock on the door drew the Alakazam's gaze from the cup of coffee swirling on his desk, to the point of entry. Sitting across the room the Professor was to engrossed in this months , SCIENCE--POKEMON to notice. After a period of five seconds the Psychic-type let out a groan, the door opening as he did so. The blue fire of telekinesis flickered around the doorknob, and the frame as the door slowly gave way to the lab. "Come in girl." Bill said; his voice as usual sounded hollow; souless, and extremely bored. Rolling his coal black eyes at the girl; who was still peering at the list, he waited.
The Professor's wrinkled fingers deftly turned another page. His brown eyes devouring the words on the page; as if they were the sustenance for life. The pictures on the page had a odd variety of pokemon; one a mixture of a Zangoose, and a seviper, and the other a Spearow; rolled together with a Pidgey. The entire article was about the precise breeding methods used to create the creatures; many of which involved force, and lots of sedatives. Done with that page the distracted Professor moved on to the next one. "Wow Bill--A gyrados and a Geng--" Upon seeing the form of kassidy he blushed.
"I AM SO SORRY MISS!" James stated, pjulling himself from his chair; slamming the magazine down on the desk in front of him. He almost fell over; he had been sitting in the same position for to long; leaving his old legs cramepd and tired. "I do apologize for not having seen you--" At a cough from Bill; he reemembered his apology from moments ago and chuckled. "I am the Professor. James please." Of course it really need not be said that he was the Professor, seeing as Bill hadn't earned the right to be called so yet, and there was nothing else in the room; unles you counted the baby pokemon in their balls on the pillars. "Welcome--" Wow. Now he was all flustered; even as ge stood there his honey colored eyes constantly looked at the magazine; oh how tempting it was!

Kassidy's eyes jerked downward as the doorknob glowed blue and seemed to almost catch on fire for a moment, then turned slowly. The door slid open, making not even the slightest creaking or grinding sound as it did so. The lights of the room beyond were, indeed, on, and as Kassidy stepped into the lab, she spotted what were apparently the only two occupants at the moment. The first one she laid eyes on (mostly because it was the only one to have spoken to her) was a bored-looking alakazam, who sat not so very far away from an older man. She reasoned that this man was most likely the professor, although she had no physical description of him to go by. Needless to say, who the alakazam was remained a mystery to her. Without really thinking, Kassidy pushed the door shut behind her, and took a couple steps off the front door mat before remembering her already-muddy boots. It was a simple matter of stepping backwards and scuffing them a few times on the mat, but it didn't seem to help much once she'd stepped back onto the clean floor. Still, there was little she could do about it, and Kassidy didn't really notice the minor mess anyway.
She stepped forward, hefting her bag into a more comfortable position on her left shoulder, and paused a little ways away from the pillars of pokeballs. It took te professor about two minutes to notice her, but Kassidy didn't get impatient until the very end, at which point she'd already finished making sure that few to no of the pokeballs had any markings on them, and thus the pillars wouldn't be of any help in choosing her first pokemon. Finally, she looked at the professor and stood, waiting. She didn't bother being too subtle trying to get his attention. She cleared her throat, fiddled with her zipper, and scuffed her shoe on the tile floor for several seconds until the man finally looked up from whatever magazine he'd been reading (which looked rather interesting, by the way) and abruptly leapt to his feet, nearly falling right over again a moment later, for apparently his legs had fallen asleep. Kassidy could recognize that condition a mile away.
He was extremely polite, and Kassidy couldn't help but grin a little as he struggled to comport himself and spurted out a pair of apologies in her general direction. She, however, was more interested in the magazine, which depicted several odd pokemon which looked almost like they'd been stitched together, with some traits of one and some of another. It was odd indeed, but not as weird as one might think based on the description - especially since Kassidy hadn't read the explanatory notes of how they'd done it in the first place. That always helped. She lifted a rather dirty hand, putting it up a little bit in a gesture of deferentiation. "S'alright." she said perhaps a bit too dismissively. "I'm not in any rush, and that magazine looks pretty cool anyway." She grinned slightly at the professor, noting his eyes dart down to the page once more. However, she ignored the lapse of attention, instead simply striding forward a couple steps and holding out one strong hand for him to shake if he so desired. "Name's Kassidy Rios." she introduced. "I don't know if there's some kind of application or anything like that, but I came here to get a pokemon, if you don't mind." Her eyes moved towards the alakazam as well, making sure not to leave him out of the conversation. Kassidy hated to be ignored almost more than anything else, and she generally tried not to ignore others either.

The Professor nodded. It was obvious he was glad to be foprgiven so easily, if the now gentle smile; free of embarassment was anything to go by. The older man was used to those who held grudges; Bill waas the type who would pay you back for a comment you made ten years earlier; and was not quick to forgive; just to state that he had forgiven you. Then he woukd pay you back later--it was kind of an I owe you philosphy. "Thanks--but I should be doing my job..." Walking so he now stood in front of the Pillars he inclined his head.
Upon hearing mention of the magazine his face seemed to be split into three by a grin; much brighter then the earlier one. "It is stimulating mentally--or cool as you put it." The Professor wasn't trying to show off, but slang words were for the most part hard on his mind; and brought forth many questions. Such as --why is it cool and not warm--? Do not most humans like the heat more then the cold? Questions like that made his head spin--so he tried to refrain from using slang. "For the most part the magazine is about the recent advances in the field of Pokemon breeding, and medicine."
Hearing her introduce herself James allowed his head to fall forwardi n acknowledgement. "Pleasure Miss Rios--i am sure." Well she had given her last name as well--and unless she said otherwise she was now 'Miss Rios'. Listening to her speak he shook his head. "No application--I just wish to now what type of pokemon you like." The last girl he had done this with had made him wish the question had never been asked. Hopefully this girl was different. Most people tried to suck up to Bill; and said 'sychic'. When they did that Bill made sure they obtained anything but a psychic type.
The Alakazam looked up, he could feel the girl glancing at him. No doubt she wanted him to introduce himself as manners dictated. "I am Bill--The professor's --well consider me another Professor." In all truth he was only with james because he chose to be; after all he had no Pokeball. The Professor had no way to control him; but he would feel bad leaving james; who was much to kind to everyone' alone. A smirk was placed on his snout as he gazed at the girl over his ceramic coffee mug.

Kassidy listened to the professor's brief explanation of the magazine. "Sweet." was her reply at the end of his sentence, as she nodded her head in turn. "Maybe I'll check it out, unless it's some kind of limited edition or whatever that you can't buy in pokemarts..." There was a slight shrug after that statement, and she seemed about to say something else, but the way he addressed her made Kassidy visibly twitch, her expression close to shock for a fraction of a second. No one ever called her miss Rios... Or miss anything for that matter... The reason? She hated it. She hated being called anything other than Kassidy (or Kass if you were really close to her) for that matter. "My name's Kassidy." she said, sounding a lot more rude than she'd originally intended. She didn't apologize though; just continued the conversation after that as though nothing had happened.
Kassidy paused a bit when the professor explained she could just say what pokemon she wanted. That sounded like a big selection... Of course, there were always strings attached, so she probably wouldn't get anything but her third or fourth choice, but still... Who knew, maybe she actually would get her first choice. Maybe. The more important question, however, was just exactly was that first choice? She'd never really made a decision on what pokemon she would pick if she could have any... Maybe a totodile? Or a charmander? Those were common starters, but they were both powerful... She wasn't generally too fond of cuddly, cute pokemon. She liked one that could intimidate the enemy as well as they could beat them up. Maybe a scyther... She had always loved those, but he probably didn't have one anyway.
The pause stretched on, until her eyes darted towards the alakazam, who then proceeded to introduce himself as Bill, and told her to call him another professor. "Okay." she said with another shrug. She didn't really think anything of it. Alakazam were incredibly smart pokemon, from what she'd heard, after all. Really, the idea of one being a professor wasn't so hard to imagine. Kassidy's mind was soon back on the task at hand, however, and she looked at the professor (the human one, that is) and stuck her hands in her jeans pockets as she spoke. "Okay, so... I don't know for sure what pokemon I want, but I've got a few choices. I'm sure you don't have all of these though. Scyther, Machop, Charmander, Onix, or Totodile. Have you got any of those?" Might as well start narrowing down from somewhere. Once Kassidy really knew all her options, she could make a decision fast, but she wanted to know what was actually available first. Ooc: Despite Kassidy's uncertainty, I was really hoping she could start out with a scyther or totodile. Those are my preferences, and I'm honestly leaning towards the totodile, although I want her to own a scyther at some point too. /Ooc
